Amazon Mike Flanagan making Carrie series

Quote:
After scoring the big deal at the Toronto Film Festival with Neon for Audience Award winner The Life of Chuck, director Mike Flanagan and Stephen King are right back at it. The Dish hears their next collaboration will be Carrie, this time in an 8-episode series for Amazon.

The 1974 novel put the young author King on the map, and also bolstered his worth as an author whose genre storytelling was most translatable to the big screen in 1976. Brian De Palma was the first director to adapt King’s coming of age story of a young sheltered girl with a domineering mother whose bullying caused unimaginable consequences due to her hyperkinetic powers. Sissy Spacek played the title character, and John Travolta, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, Betty Buckley and William Katt also starred. Several followups came later, including The Rage: Carrie 2, a 2002 telepic, and a 2013 remake that starred Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore.

This would be the second recent deal in which one of King’s treasures would be given a longer storytelling road. A24 has Paul Greegrass and JH Wyman adapting King’s Fairy Tale into a series, after an earlier attempt to mount it as a movie at Universal made them realize there was just too much story to pack into one feature. The Gary Dauberman-directed Salem’s Lot was just released for Halloween.

Don't get me wrong I've been a fan of Mike Flanagan for a while now, but you'd think two meh remakes, and a more-or-less forgotten sequel would have been enough for this story.

8 episodes also seems too much for the store.

He's definitely going to have further develop several different plot points. But I could easily see an entire episode given to the history of her mother (not that would necessarily be a good thing) and also some extra b/c plots to the neighbors/other kids. But like I previously said, I'm just not sure if it's needed. The book (and original movie) worked perfectly without all the extra padding.

What titles are you referring to specifically? I'd assume the "more-or-less forgotten sequel" is Doctor Sleep?? Honestly, I don't think anyone could have done Doctor Sleep better than Flanagan aside from maybe Kubrick himself and that wasn't ever gonna happen. He was fighting an uphill battle from the start....a sequel 40 years after the original released and a blend of both the book and the Kubrick film which didn't follow the book super closely. Albeit I am still a little annoyed that the director's cut wasn't on the 4K disc but then again it wasn't a huge box office success so couldn't expect much in terms of home media

Doctor Sleep is the sequel to “The Shining” not “Carrie”…. I was referring to the various “Carrie” adaptations…

Completely unnecessary. Christ Flanagan, we want the tower.

I actually just got the book and am gonna start reading it this week...it is less than 300 pages long, I don't know how it becomes an 8-episode series lol but I suppose I trust Flanagan above most others to do it

Ahhh, that makes more sense now. When you said you were "a fan of Mike Flanagan but..." and then went on to explain, I thought you meant that you were tired of seeing his works.

But I agree, definitely could have chosen better source material for an 8-part miniseries. Heck even The Shining would have been a better choice. Flesh out some of the stories of the ghosts of the Overlook and how they got there.

Only tried the one remake and Id agree on the meh take.

Flanagan is usually good but not all the time. The original is really all I care about. Even that has aged a bit and I dont watch it much anymore.

What a waste of time and money, and talent.

We don't need another CARRIE. I'm so tired of these IP ca$h grab productions.

King’s slimmest novel needs the bloated miniseries treatment from Mike Flanagan, said no one ever.

I started reading the book today and it's even funnier now having read some of it that this'll get an 8-episode series, given that 50 of the 290ish pages have gone by and aside from a little backstory the only thing that's actually happened is she's gotten her period and went home from school

We should expect at least 3 eps from this focused on Margaret's upbringing and why she became a religious freak.

Oh yeah, there's gonna flashbacks throughout the whole thing. Including how she met Carrie's dad, him leaving, etc.

UGH.

I am sure Mike Flanagan will do fine with another Stephen King book and hopefully follows the book closely about Carrie and her mom in the past.
