Default AVR video settings and picture calibration

My mother in law has a Harman Kardon AVR 247. Her picture quality is kind of blah, so I need to calibrate her set.

The HK has built in upscaling to 720p, as well as its own video settings (Vivid, sports, etc. as well as settings for brightness, sharpness, etc.)

Since there are two different settings, how do you go about calibrating the picture?

If she uses the receiver as a video signal switcher, just run the signal from the DVD player as usual. Load the disc, and go for it.

If not, run the test signals straight from the DVD player to the TV and calibrate from there

good luck
