Default Mortdecai must become a cult classic!

I don't know why Johnny Depp's new movie Mortdecai has received so much negative critisism. I loved the movie! It was so wonderfully exaggerated and so over the top bad that it actually became really good! And Depp's performance is spot on perfect.

I would be surprised if this doesn't become a cult classic.

This movie will be as memorable as Daddy Day Care - forgettable meh.

Every single movie is loved by someone. It doesnt mean it will become a cult classic.

The problem here is that cult classics are generally enjoyable.

This movie is thoroughly enjoyable, me and my friends loved it! I just don't think everyone has the right mindset or the right kind of humor to appreciate such an over the top masterpiece such as this

It was almost as good as The Lone Ranger.

It's two different kind of movies. The Lone Ranger is a better movie, but in its genre of over the top and wonderfully exaggerated movies that are so bad that it actually becomes really good, this movie is a masterpiece

you can't force a movie to become a cult classic. Either it is an instant cult (camp) classic like Showgirls, or it will take a few years like Troop Beverly Hills.

This.

Mortdecai is too horrible to be a cult classic. Cult films are typically really good films that, for various reasons, just didn't do well at the theater.

Usually a devoted fandom of some kind has to form, with more than a few people extolling the virtues of said film, in order for there to be a chance of it becoming a cult classic. Feel free to let us know if this has happened.

Jupiter Ascending, for example, is another recently released film which was also critically maligned and bombed at the American box office. However, there's already a strong cult following which is only going to increase as time goes on. I'm not sure Mortdecai is having that effect on people.

With Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis headlining Jupiter Ascending, i'm sure it has a strong following of 14 year olds Not sure if that would classify it as having a possibility to become cult though.

Why must it become one? Is it to justify/validate your appreciation of it? Can't you just like it and move on?

as opposed to why exactly you think Mortdecai will become a cult classic?

I hate to break it to you, but 14 year old girls have been turning movies into cult films more reliably and for longer than pretty much any other demographic.

the fact that people still care about Mean Girls pretty much obliterates your intended insult

I think everyone here is misinterpreting the meaning of the word "must" in this particular case. It's not meant as forceful, it's meant more as "i can't believe it if this movie doesn't become a cult classic".

Just wanted to clarify that.

EDIT: I love your avatar dvdmike, Moonrise Kingdom is one of the most amazing movies ever

In order for Mortdecai to become a cult classic there have to be people that like it, so far you seem to be the only one.

I'm usually on the side of believing that all movies have some redeeming quality, and that somebody somewhere probably loves it. But that doesn't mean every movie is good enough to be remembered and championed long into the future.

It also has a strong following of girls and women but I guess that demographic and teenagers have an inability to turn a film into a cult classic? That's only possible for older men to do? Hmm.
