Sony Postpones "Godzilla" - Blu-ray Forum

Sony has announced a street date postponement for 'Godzilla,' pushing back its planned March Blu-ray debut to tweak the disc's bonus features.

As we've previously reported, Sony first announced back in October that it was bringing the 1998 Roland Emmerich-remake of Godzilla' to Blu-ray on March 28, 2008 (day-and-date with a new special edition DVD re-issue). on the heels of a special sneak peek of 'Godzilla's bonus features that the studio held this past January at CES, Sony has removed both the Blu-ray and DVD versions from its upcoming release schedule. Although no new date has been announced, Sony says it's currently at work crafting the disc's supplements, and is planning a re-announce of the title due in the coming months.

Extras originally revealed for the Blu-ray included "Behind the Scenes of Godzilla with Charles Caiman" featurette, an "All Time Best Of Godzilla Fight Scenes" montage and the "Heroes" music video by The Wallflowers. We'll keep you posted as soon as official word comes in on further extras and a new street date.

In the meantime, we've moved 'Godzilla (1998)' to the "Release Dates Postponed" section of our Blu-ray Release Schedule.

Weak. After seeing Cloverfield I was pretty excited for this one. The excitement will probably wear off by the time it comes out

Damn... too bad. I hope they will surprise us with some kickass special features now! Good that I just got rid of my DVD version

The GOOD news is they also yanked the DVD release, so we'll still get day-and-date with Blu, which is a positive spin for the marketing guys.

I really am not surprised. A lot of films get delayed because the directors, who to some extent have feedback in the creative process of optical media releases, are not 100% satisfied with the encode or the bonus features, etc. Emmerich is sorta high-strung, from what I've read. He probably wants this to pop if his name is attached to it (just like any Luc Besson movies... I love how he "signs" the cover art).

Hmmm...

Maybe Sony delayed Godzilla to coincide with the release of Cloverfield on...BLU-RAY! Yeah I know which studio Cloverfield belongs to, but if Sony got wind that Paramount was switching sides soon, a delay on Godzilla makes perfect sense. That could be some great studio co-marketing right there.

I too liked this. Better than King Kong, in fact. Whereas Kong was too long and pretentious (albeit prettier) the Godzilla remake/bastardization was mostly fun B-movie schlock.

i wouldnt buy this terrible movie on BD if the fate of the world depended on it.. come on sony.. give up some damn good movies we all want..
