Default PS4 (+PS2, PS3 & PS5?) controllers inevitably dying after around 10 years?

Recently I wanted to use a previously perfectly functional PS4 controller of mine, only to discover that two of the directions on its d-pad don't work. I've taken good care of it throughout the years, haven't thrown it around, and always kept it in a climate-controlled environment (not in a basement/attic/garage).

The funny thing is that the reason I wanted to use it is to play my PS2 (via a Brook converter), because I discovered that a NEVER USED, first time out of its packaging PS2 controller of mine had a similar problem when I tried to use it for the very first time.

Has anyone had similar experiences or are these two controllers flukes?

Some people are saying that this circuitry on the Sony controllers conductive film randomly starts failing:

These things are used on all Sony controllers.
It's just a shame that Sony cheaped-out on these parts when you have near-40 year-old NES controllers still working perfectly fine.

Odd...last I checked all my PS controllers still work, some of which are PS1 controllers from 1997.

Yeah, I don't think that's true. I last used my PS2 a few months ago, and I used my PS3 last month without any issues. Those are both way over the 10 year mark. My PS4 isn't quite 10 years old yet (roughly 9 years, IIRC), but those work fine too. I've actually never had to replace a Playstation controller, and I own every PS system, from the PS1 to the PS5.

My 1989 Genesis controllers still work. And my other old consoles, SMS, etc.
PS1, PS2 and PS3 controllers still work. PS3 works, only when connected. Its battery has long since died, but when connected, it'll function normally.

PS4 original controllers no longer work due to the micro USB ports having connectivity issues with the charging cord just from normal play and connecting/disconnecting to charge.
I have a 3rd party clone PS4 controller that is much more reliable for a couple years now, and built stronger for the Micro USB charge port.

PS5 controller, no issues yet, 2 years+ in.
