Default A Slight Problem When Watching BD's With PS3

Hello Guys,

When I am watching standard DVD's on my 32inch LCD I can choose between modes--that is: Zoom, Wide Zoom, Full, and Normal. But when I'm watching BD's on my PS3, I can only switch between the Full & Zoom mode and the Wide Zoom & Normal modes cannot be accessed. I was wondering why that is? The picture is still fine using the Full mode (amidst the inevitable black bars) but I thought maybe with Wide Zoom I could at least narrow the black bars a little?

When your Blu Ray player is set to high resolution 1080i or 1080p, the TV does not allow you to change the modes. When the resolution of the DVD player is set to 480i or 480p, then you can change the modes.

So the picture I'm getting now is the way the director intended it to be seen, right? So does that mean at 1080i or 1080P I do not actually need the Wide Zoom or Normal modes and that setting it is now on ('Full', that is) is okay?

Yes, it is correct. Most standard video and TV shows are square. However, HD TVs are rectangular. You have these options to adjust the the TV so that the video fills the screen. By changing the modes you normally distort the picture or lose part of the picture. With HD programs, you do not need this.

Thanks for your informative reply, really appreciated . But just one more thing: is there are normal width for the black bars that appear in movies that are 2.35:1? Like the vertical length? Are they normally narrow or thick?--Or does that change when the screen gets wider?
Thanks again for the reply.

The width and the height of HD TV screen is a compromise so that most movies look pleasing. Unfortunately, movies are shot differently. If a movie is extra wide, the width of the black bars increases. The black bars become less bothersome as you move to a larger TV.

Yeah, what I'm talking about is films that come in 2.35:1 ratio--they obviously will have black bars on a 16:9 TV but what I want to know is there a normal width for the black bars--such as the vertical height of a bar, etc?

I really don't know what the normal height of a black bar is. I suggest that you check the following links:
