Default The Last American Virgin (1982)

Source

Quote:
There's only one thing left to lose.

Virginity is up against some stiff competition in this uproariously "entertaining" (Boxoffice) comedy about three sex-starved high school buddies with only one thing left to lose. Written and directed by Boaz Davidson with a "bitter sweet style" (The Hollywood Reporter) and pulsing with music by U2, The Cars, Devo and more, The Last American Virgin is a devastatingly funny "teen romp [that's] a notch above" (Boxoffice)!

This semester, Gary, Rick and David are determined to get laid - even if it means going toe to toe with a hilarious array of high-strung hookers, naughty nymphomaniacs and naive high school girls. But when Gary falls for the girl of his dreams - only to learn that she's about to become Rick's latest conquest - he soon discovers that having sex doesn't mean just losing his virginity, it may mean losing his innocence... forever.

The Last American Virgin is one of the most direly bleak and soul-crushing films that I have ever seen. It's not bleak in a nuclear-attack-and-zombies-eat-everyone sort of way, but in a realistic too-close-to-home life-sucks sort of way. It's a good film for many reasons and there is a fun vibe through most of it, but those who have seen the movie know what I mean.

I dunno. In a way, I really want this on Blu-ray for my collection, and, in another way, I really sort of don't. I was a big fan of Diane Franklin back in the day, so I'm probably in for buying it.

Also, the soundtrack is ace.

I'll give the filmmakers credit for having some guts to make such a flick.

Very few films have captured the genuine awkwardness and brutal honesty of high school romance like The Last American Virgin, IMO. The ending devastates me every time I watch it, but I applaud Boaz Davidson for not going the safe Hollywood route with it.

I appreciate Olive releasing 80's titles, but this is just a wasted release for people who already have the superior Arrow UK release. Oh well, I guess those who still haven't gone region free will appreciate this.

Yeah, as a big fan of this movie it sorta irks me to see it get released here bare-bones when there's a good special edition out there. Fortunately I have a panasonic player. :P

Not to mention Olive titles are a tad pricey for what you get. Amazon Canada is charging $30.55 for Without a Clue!

I'll probably pick this up when I can get it for cheap from Family Video or one of DD and offspring companies. Better than opening a can of worms (by importing, once the train goes, it never stops and I don't have the time or money to buy and resell everything ever) and going absolutely broke as a result.

Recently re-watched my Arrow import and it's fantastic. Probably not bother with this one.

Good that the US is getting this. I'll be picking it up. I don't care much about extras I'll watch once, so this will be fine.

Same here. Cast and crew interviews can be found on Youtube, anyway. As long as the video and audio presentation is good, that's all that matters to me.

Olive is too cheap to port over any special features or even the English subs. Pass. I'll stick with the superior Arrow release.

I'm guessing the image quality will be slightly inferior - the Arrow transfer is housed on a BD50 with a bitrate of 35 and a file-size of 26.87 GB, whereas the Olive disc will doubtless be single-layer with a bitrate roughly a little over half that of Arrow's.

I have the UK release, but nice for non-multi-region folks.

This film is like a split personality with its silly, juvenile side and its serious, heartbreaking side. Somehow, it works and makes a lasting impression. Love it.

This is such great news! I almost bought the DVD the other day but thought it was too expensive! Thank goodness I didn't pull the trigger!
