(Jean Rollin, 1975)
Release date: 24 October 2023
Limited Edition 4K UHD (World premiere)

One of Jean Rollin’s best-loved films, Lips of Blood (Lèvres de sang) finds the master of the fantastique marshalling all of his obsessions – ruined châteaux, remote beaches, abandoned graveyards, mysterious twins, and female vampires.

When a photograph of a decrepit seaside château evokes a childhood vision of an encounter with a mysterious girl, Frederick is compelled to investigate. Soon, he uncovers a surreal and erotic netherworld of vampirism from which he might never return.

Starring regular Rollin actors Jean-Loup Philippe (The Rape of the Vampire), Natalie Perrey (The Iron Rose), and twins Cathy and Marie-Pierre Castel (Requiem for a Vampire), Lips of Blood is a tour de force within Rollin’s inimitable oeuvre.

Awesome. Another healthy negative. This one should look killer in uhd, too. Indicator is kicking ass on these Rollin titles, as promised. Keep ‘em coming!!!

This time the NSFW artwork is underneath the J-Card. I'm so amped for this.

Is this one considered the best Jean Rollin film?

Is the movie half as awesome as that artwork? Maybe I should pop in my unwatched Blu tonight.

Hard to choose....It's like being asked to pick a favorite child... Fortunately we won't have to be too choosy if Indicator keeps pumping these out like this in rapid succession. When I think I have my priorities in order on these, I watch a few of them again, and it usually sways my opinion a bit, once more. For certain, Indicator's treatment of Shiver of the Vampires in 4k brought my appreciation of it up a couple of notches. This is likely to happen with a decent number of these films as they roll out on uhd.

I remain curious as to whether Indicator will be able to locate better elements (or a new scan thereof) for Iron Rose and/or Grapes of Death, which were both hampered by the weakest blu rays of the more popular Rollin titles, mainly based on whatever remaining elements Redemption was required to use at the time. I also think Requiem for a Vampire is very likely to happen in 4k, as its remaining elements are clearly in excellention condition/likely available. It'll be a real stunner, like Fascination and Lips.

The Grapes of Death is far and away his best film, IMO, but that's no slight on Lips of Blood, which is still terrific.

I can't believe they're also releasing Fascination on UHD. Another must buy!

Absolutely. And the better these sets sell, the more Rollin titles they’ll continue to release in uhd. Partly why I’m supporting each one pretty aggressively. I buy two sets of each for my own library. And I’ve even bought two extra sets of Shiver and gifted them to cinema-enthusiast friends for their recent birthdays. The extra $10 cost over a typical big-studio release is well worth the serious restoration efforts, the hardshell slip, and the killer encodes. I’d rather support these excellent deluxe boutique releases now, of cool, more obscure horrors, than just line the big studios’ pockets for their mediocre transfers of more popular films with lousy encodes and not even original audio many times, most of which releases will all be $9.99 on Black Friday anyway.

Definitely in for this and Fascination, too. The Grapes of Death is probably my fave Rollin. Hopefully we get Grapes in 4K early 2024. Living Dead Girl is another gem. The Nude Vampire seems to be not talked about as much as some other Rollin films, but I like it a lot, and would definitely upgrade to 4K.
I wonder if there is much demand for a Zombie Lake 4K UHD? Not the best film, but who know, maybe it will be SLIGHTLY better in a fancy new UHD release.

All the titles you mention are a must for most Rollin fans. Living Dead Girl should look fantastic.

And, yep, I admit it, I’d even grab Zombie Lake if Indicator dropped it in a 4K uhd deluxe set. That would be their most ballsy release ever if it were to happen…..I can’t imagine the title sells at all, but you just never know. The old Redemption blu has been OOP for some time now. It seems they didn’t even bother to press more copies. The dvd is still kicking around here and there.

Zombie Lake was co-written by Jess Franco, and of course it stars frequent Franco actor Howard Vernon! So yeah, for "Euro-trash" fans (ugh I hate that term) it has some merit, I guess. It will be interesting to see if Indicator releases this on 4K UHD. Maybe they will save the worst for last?

These 2 movies are really making it difficult on me. As they are super enticing + I feel like if I get them, I have to also jump on all the other ones released so far or coming next month before they sell out...

Just do it. But all of them. You'll be truly happy and have a deep sense of self worth if you do.

It's only money, just do it.

I'm seriously considering it, I have Shivers and Two Orphan's in my cart now. Does anyone know where the line stops for collecting Jean Rollin films though? Where they are no longer worth getting...

They released Cold Eyes of Fear and Black Magic Rites. Both of those would be considered less known than Zombie Lake. Lake also has the connection to Franco which would certainly help it sell.

================

There's a four film range from 1971-1975 with only three mainstream works, meaning ONE of the following is likely:
Jeunes filles impudiques (Schoolgirl Hitchhikers)
Tout le monde il en a deux (Fly Me The French Way)
Phantasmes (The Seduction Of Amy)
Also: La nuit des étoiles filantes (A Virgin Among The Living Dead. One scene, otherwise a Franco.)

Next up, the five film range:

Les paumées du petit matin (The Escapees)
La morte vivante (The Living Dead Girl)
Les trottoirs de Bangkok (The Sidewalks Of Bangkok)
Perdues dans New York (TV) (Lost In New York)
Killing Car
Also: Le lac des morts vivants (Zombie Lake)

Will Indicator combine two films on a disc like Kino did (though Kino combined Lost In New York with the 2002 (!) film Dracula's Fiancee), and include Zombie Lake in their Rollin line, or will they keep all five of the main films separate and leave Zombie Lake out?

We don't know if there's anything AFTER Two Orphan Vampires. It's possible there's 418-420. There's his last three mainstream works:
La fiancée de Dracula (Dracula's Fiancee)
La nuit des horloges (The Night of the Clocks)
Le masque de la Méduse (The Mask Of Medusa)
