Couple of Indian titles I bought from Twin doesn't have English Subs, only Japanese subtitles. More likely this title follows the same.

I sure hope some US or UK company like Arrow releases this with English subs. It never happened for Bahubali, though, so I'll get this set in case an English-friendly release never happens. Hopefully Indian producers see that there is still value in physical media.

This sure came out of the blue! Long overdue, and I had given up hope on it.

Seems like a crime if you win an Oscar and your movie isn't available to buy on physical media ... in North America ... with English subs

I'll be importing a Blu-ray copy, another disc for my expensive Japanese import collection, hopefully enough people will buy these releases and they'll see that the demand is there.

Now I can't wait for October!

Dreamz released it theatrically and Netflix/Zee5 ended up with streaming rights - the only Indian films I can see being licensed out are older titles than modern ones. Although, All that Breathes, Against the Tide, Kill, Girls Will Be Girls, All We Imagine as Light, Sister Midnight sold to western distributors for crossover appeal, so there is at least some hope for future titles.

I'm not sure if Arrow would work, but maybe Shout! Studios could do a 4K.

It's definitely a point of curiosity, I imagine there must be some contractual / rights-related considerations. Whatever a company is going to produce, those specific assets have to be supplied to them, so that discussion about what they're going to include has to be a part of their contract to do the release.

You'd think that if possible there would be some thought, hey, we are the first/only ones releasing this on Blu-ray/4K, not even considering audio dubs, but if we even added just subtitles in different languages, which are already all available having been produced for theatrical and streaming, more people might buy it.

Otherwise it'll just be a repeat of Godzilla Minus One, hey, this is the only release available, now various news outlets are reporting it's the most shared movie and guess what, the studio isn't happy about it. Of course don't forget that people like to share everything, but I'm not sure what they expected by only releasing something popular in one country, with the status of any other release being completely unknown - I'm sure that didn't help.

Way back in the early 2000's when Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in India was nominated for the best foreign film Oscar and generated some buzz, there were huge hopes that Sony would put out a BD of the film. It never happened. And this was before the age of streaming, when OTT majors demand platform exclusivity and even suppress physical releases of films (at least in India).

Does anyone know where the 179-minute runtime is coming from? The film says it should be 187 minutes on most sites. The Hindi-dubbed version on Netflix says 185 minutes and apparently, that version is slightly different:

So perhaps that accounts for the minor runtime difference there. But the Japanese rental Blu-ray and all Japanese versions (e.g. Amazon Prime Video) say 179 minutes, so does anyone know if anything is cut or re-arranged in this version?

The Netflix version is exactly 185 minutes and 46 seconds long, which translates to ~178 minutes in 25 frames per second instead of 24. Maybe that's the answer?

But I understand that the Netflix version is only the Hindi version, whereas the Japanese versions are the Telugu version.

The difference is the end credits only. In the Netflix versions there's a song at the end and that takes the full screen, and then the credits come afterwards with no music. Versus in the Japanese versions (confirmed through the rental on Japan Amazon Prime) the credits share the screen with the song (which trims off the extra 5 or so minutes). FPS should be the same.

The Japanese rental blu-ray is 179 minutes and 8 seconds. In addition to what was already said about the end credits song, the opening credits in the blu-ray are also about a minute shorter, starting just before the DVV Entertainments logo when the music starts playing. It also has the intermission but that makes no difference to the duration because the streaming version also has the intermission, just without the INTERRRVAL text.
