I just received my copy of "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", my first European blu-ray disc and it played fine on my American Samsung.
I post this here as I didn't find any reliable information with regard to regional coding on blu-ray discs. This one for sure is region-free despite the "Region B" icon on the back cover. I hope this isn't going to be the exception to the rule. Regional coding is the last thing we need now given that HD DVD will not regionally code their product. |

Care to check? If you add the new firmware, the region-coding for Blu-ray gets enforced. |

Picture quality is excellent as Goodstuff already noted, especially in the very dark scenes one still sees details that would most probably drown in black on standard definition (I saw the movie for the very first time on this BD, so I cannot compare it to a theatrical or regular DVD presentation). The PCM 5.1 sound is very good, too, it powerfully enhances the horror of Emily's visions and distorsions.
A nice thing is that this disc features the 122 min. unrated version (or "Unseen Version" as they call it). Downside of this release is that it doesn't have any extra features at all, the trailer of "The Da Vinci Code" doesn't count for me, this is advertisment and not a special feature. I purchased my Samsung a couple of weeks ago from a Los Angeles based wholeseller. I have not installed the firmware update as my player already had the dots and not the hourglass and I never experienced any problems with playing BDs with dts audio (Not only "regular" dts plays fine on the Samsung, I didn't have any problem with the lossless 5 Mbps dts on "Kingdom of Heaven", either, and without this update). What you said, Blackraven, does it mean that if I continue to skip firmeware updates, I will always have a region-free player? I have already ordered a PS3 which will come to us in March, so from then on I will have the A and B regions anyway, but a region-free player would be great! |
