Default Donald Sutherland 1935–2024

Donald Sutherland, Star of 'MASH,' 'Klute' and 'Hunger Games,' Dies at 88

Quote:
Donald Sutherland, the tall, lean and long-faced Canadian actor who became a countercultural icon with such films as “The Dirty Dozen,” “MASH,” “Klute” and “Don’t Look Now,” and who subsequently enjoyed a prolific and wide-ranging career in films including “Ordinary People” and “Without Limits,” died Thursday in Miami after a long illness, CAA confirmed. He was 88.

For over a half century, the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor memorably played villains, antiheroes, romantic leads and mentor figures. His profile had recently increased with his supporting role as the evil President Snow in “The Hunger Games” franchise.

Sutherland won a supporting actor Emmy for HBO’s “Citizen X” in 1995 and was also nominated in 2006 for the Lifetime miniseries “Human Trafficking.”

Very much appreciated "in his day" (ie-back in the '70s), but was very quickly pigeonholed into the "great character actor" space. Honestly the same thing happened to his MASH co star Elliott Gould.

One of the few things that I loved about Duncan Jones' Mute (his follow up to Moon) were the characters that Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux played where they were obviously riffing on Sutherland and Gould in MASH.

Fantastic actor. I'll always be annoyed that he didn't do 24 season 6. The plot involved Jack Bauer's dad. Like, who could have been more perfect to play that role?

This is heartbreaking. I can't say I was ever a rabid fan of Donald's work, but I had major respect for his talent and dedication. My favorite of his roles are probably Mr. X in JFK, Merrick in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and John Bridger in the 2003 version of The Italian Job. He will definitely be missed.

It always annoyed me that his performance in Ordinary People was overlooked. He was the emotional core of the film.

From Kiefer Sutherland's twitter:

"With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived."

I first knew of him from his TV work in the 2000s. He was one of the main supporting characters in Commander in Chief opposite Geena Davis. He played a Republican political rival. Great character. The show only lasted one season though. Then a couple of years after that he played the patriarch on Dirty Sexy Money. Same network, ABC, but that show lasted two seasons.

It wasn’t until years later that I saw him in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Don’t Look Now, and Ordinary People, all on Blu-ray.

He had a great career. Easily over 100 film and TV credits.

I first saw him in "National Lampoon's Animal House" waaaay back when I was young and then quickly found him to be the star of a lot of other great films. He had such a distinct talent and he will be missed terribly.

I snagged Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Eagle Has Landed in the last week never having seen either of them. I'll definitely have to bump them up in my watchlist.
