Aren't these on D+ in 4K? If so, how does this one look? I remember the Blu being quite decent.

If they do a decent job with this one, I'll definitely pick it up. It definitely has the potential to be an absolute stunner. It all just depends on whether it gets the right treatment.

In the potc thread people were saying D+ versions barely look better than the already great (imo) blurays

Pretty sure the first film didn't have a great blu-ray.
It wasn't bad, but not great.
Definitely room for improvement.

Can confirm- the compression is extreme. Even a BD66 would be a massive improvement.

The main issue is the HDR grading on these. Same applies to National Treasure 1. It's as if they used some auto HDR pass via software. I will wait for reviews and then pull the trigger as it would be a disaster if they used the same source as the ones on D+.

I wouldn't call the Blu decent now. It looks very dated.

I hop, hope, HOPE Disney did a new 4K scan.

With all the VFX it's probably a LOTR situation I would guess.

The Blus look very good on their own. First part, sort of, the rest are really good. It's the HDR grading that will be the deciding factor for the 4K UHD as they look really bad on D+.

Wait, what?!!! Is this the first Pirates flick? Oh hell yes if so, LOVE that one (hated all the rubbish that followed tho), day one baby! This could look and SOUND epic if they don't mouse it up. And Keira Knightley in 4k...Yum Yum Yum, and a bottle of rum.

Rewatched the trilogy at the weekend, excellent stuff. Blus still look great so I can't see me upgrading, for a long time at least.

Yup, sequels still look very nice, but I recently checked some scenes from Black Pearl and nope; this movie desperately needs a remaster.
