Default Discovery will combine HBO Max and Discovery Plus following TimeWarner merger

Discovery will combine HBO Max and Discovery Plus following TimeWarner merger

Months after announcing their purposed $43 billion merger, WarnerMedia and Discovery have answered what will happen to HBO Max and Discovery Plus once they form the imaginatively named Warner Bros. Discovery. Per Variety, Discovery chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels said during a recent panel at the 30th Annual Media, Internet and Telecom Conference that the company plans to combine the two platforms into one unified streaming service.

“One of the most important items here is that we believe in a combined product as opposed to a bundle,” he said. “We believe that the breadth and depth of this content offering is going to be a phenomenal consumer value proposition.”

Merging the two platforms is something Wiedenfels said he expects will take a few months for Warner Bros. Discovery to “do it in a way that’s actually a great user experience for our subscribers.” In the meantime, HBO Max and Discovery Plus customers should expect at least some form of bundling.

Wiedenfels suggested that could take the form of content sharing between the two platforms and the introduction of a single sign-on. One question the executive didn’t answer is how much it will cost to subscribe to the new combined service. Discovery Plus and HBO Max currently start at $5 and $10 per month, with both platforms offering more expensive ad-free tiers.

Good. As it should be. Discovery+ is not as good as HBO Max.

from the OP "Wiedenfels said he expects will take a few months".

There's no launch date announced yet, and the $43 billion Discovery-WarnerMedia deal isn't likely to close until late April.

Probably the two services I use most.

Still shocked at how deep the HBO Max film library goes.

I feel like this is the first one of these mergers that actually makes complete sense to me. These two services just compliment each other so well. If I HAD to choose on Streaming Service to rule them all... this might be it. They will have Joe Kenda AND Criterion content streaming.

Take my freaking money.

Criterion? Guess it would be foolish to renew Criterion Channel for another year then.
Read the article cited, but couldn't find any reference to Criterion. Did this come from a different source?

It's not the whole Criterion catalog.

But it's a big chunk of it.

It gets folded into the TCM hub on HBO Max and they don't really promote it outside of that silo.

I think that is still a pretty accurate list.

You can also search "criterion" @ https://play.hbomax.com/search

OK. A small subset from the ones I checked. The Criterion Channel shows 2837 but they break out titles just as the list does, so a trilogy is 3. Criterion Collection currently stands at 1515. Sticking with the Criterion Channel.

There's definitely no comparison as far as the quantity.

But the CC titles on HBO Max are a sweet addition to the already ridiculously deep catalog of classic cinema. It's a good gateway for a more casual film fan to be exposed to some great films.

What?

You will get all of HBO Max’s content and Discovery when the content merger is complete. The library will get bigger and you can always not watch that content.

I don’t watch Disney Junior content on Disney+ nor do i watch everything HBO Max offers.

Speaking of, I am wondering about the specialty services like this or Motor Trend's service. I would very much be interested in having motorsports on HBO Max, but so far (unless I'm missing it) we aren't hearing of any changes planned for said smaller services.

I think they are saying they don't really want what Max has to offer, but they like Discovery+, so now they would have to pay for Max (which of course is more expensive) in order to keep watching the content they liked at Discovery.
