Default Blurays Of 2024?

Come on folks - the lists are appearing, Sight & Sound have theirs out. What are your discs, both domestic and overseas, of the year?

I have too many unwatched ones for this to be representative of what has been released that has interested me, but here goes:

I vampiri is a good film, but this disc has video footage of Mario Bava in the extras. I didn't know such a thing existed in the world, as I have always only seen the same 5 or so photos of him.

[edit] Adding other favourites and honorable mentions below:

My most expected release in a while, after this I felt like my must-have collection is complete and now I'm just adding the bonus stuff

Amazing looking special edition box of a special film.

I have only seen Tih Minh so far, but based on that there's no way this isn't one of the very best releases of the year.

What can I say, I am not much of a cook, but this was a lovely thing for me to learn about Vincent Price's cooking interests. I loved the extras more than the show itself.

As far as I understand the label that released this is run by a not very nice person, but Bill Rebane in 4K, amazing that this exists. Never would have expected it.

Really beautiful set. Somewhy I thought there would be more extras, I remember learning more of the making of some time ago when watching it on the Criterion Channel. I could be mistaken.

Just great stuff

The award for the box set I hesitated the longest about and ended up being glad I got it.

Some things I didn't watch yet that I expect would be on my list:

Given my viewing usually runs years behind my acquisitions it is often hard to answer this sort of question, but I have two candidates, both UHDs:

The Coppola is the release we've been waiting for, an audio-visual delight. And it's great to get a new Miyazaki at anytime

Release of the year for me is...

(Drum roll)

...Radiance's The Agitator: Three Provocations from the Wild World of Jean-Pierre Mocky. Three terrific films I'd never heard of given a first class treatment.

And a big thanks to the boutiques for their sterling work this year. Of particular note:
  • Indicator for their 4K Rollin and Oxploitation releases.
  • 88 Films for their bringing Jackie Chan and Italian horrors to 4K.
  • Eureka for their Feuillade set.
  • Pathe and Gaumont in France for bringing their classics to 4K and so many wonderful obscure titles to BD.
  • Carlotta for their terrific Wenders and Truffaut 4Ks and BDs.

One of the best years in recent memory without a doubt, I can't list just one, that wouldn't be fair!

My most wanted has to go to Happiness.... finally!

New favorite label is Error 4444, I love what they are doing and their packaging/editions are some of the best.

Love what Arrow did with the J-Horror set and the presentation on Silence of the Lambs looks gorgeous.

Of course we cannot forget Second Sight, especially the French Extremity releases and about god damn time, The Hitcher.

Labour of love I would say it's hard to beat the effort that went into The Blair Witch.

An old favorite that I'm so pleased to own on 4K.

Shoutout to Radiance for just being the literal best in the game.

Still got a few decent releases from 2024 to watch between now and the end of the year, so I’m looking forward to exploring back through my purchases from this year to pick out the gems. It’s been another great year for physical media, so it might be a big list

A quintessential Criterion release for me. How I initially formed an opinion about who Criterion were and what they represent. The massive effort they made to restore these films from fire damaged elements. The BD set was my first Criterion purchase back in early 2019 many months before I finally got hold of a multi region player. And 2024 brought us the 4k upgrade.

And Vol.5 (buying it this month). All the other sets I bought in 2024 were from earlier years. like Moodysson for example,

Was very much a 4k year for me

Others from '24 I've enjoyed

Criterion 4k:
Trainspotting 4k
To Die For 4k
Blue Velvet 4k
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid 4k
Dazed and Confused 4k
Risky Business 4k
Le samouraï 4k
Blow Out 4k
Akira Kurosawa's Dreams 4k
Lone Star 4k
One False Move 4k

Arrow 4k:
Withnail & I 4k
Witness 4k
American Gigolo 4k
Invasion of the Body Snatchers 4k

Planet Earth III 4k
Nostalghia 4k
The Dreamers 4k
One from the Heart 4k
The African Queen 4k
Priscilla 4k
Aliens 4k (not watched yet)

And BDs:

BFI:
Chocolat
A Dry White Season
Hidden City
Two Films by Yasujirō Ozu

Radiance:
Messiah of Evil
The Sting of Death
Haxan
The Day of the Owl

All That Money Can Buy
Harry Palmer Collection:
A Kid for Two Farthings

Indicator too:
Desire
Love Me Tonight
Honor Among Lovers
An American Tragedy
Impossible Object
Single White Female

Others still on their way to me:

Nothing is Sacred: Bunuel

Kino Lorber:
The Country Girl
Daisy Miller
Deadly Circuit
4 from BB: La Bride sur le cou, Naughty Girl, Les Femmes, Two Weeks in September

I feel quite guilty at leaving some out of this top 10 - Anime Limited's Macross Plus UE despite being pricey is a cracking release. As is the recent The Box of Delights from the Beeb. I know that some folks were underwhelmed by the BFI's The Seven Samurai but again I thought it was a great release.

Equally, both WAC and KL had fanastic years but aren't represented, which is a shame.

I haven't been able to get many new releases this year, but Severins second folk horror set is the standout release from what I have had.

I watched after I posted my list, I think at least one Rollin Indicator 4K should be on it, and I forgot what were the others that came out this year and what in the previous.

[edit] Yes, actually Requiem is my favourite from 2024, my other favourites are from 2023.

I don't buy much in the way of physical media, but for me these have made my year

Still got Demolition Man from Arrow to arrive and I'm sure that'll make the list too

Dunno if these count but anyway, I bought these in 2024 so here goes...

Wonderful little film that ramps up to a great finish.

This was very nearly my #1 disc of the year. What a film. That soundtrack too. Belissimo!

Cracking trilogy that I devoured over a weekend. I want the rest of the films now!

A slow burner but the climax is excellent and makes the film utterly supreme.

A great trio of films. Thoroughly enjoyable fare.

Joint number one purchase of 2024. Don't overlook this one. Not awards fare, but what an archive of work. Love it.

This was brilliant. The ending twisted me in knots! Great!

Nice film. Loved the camerawork and the Creation tune is mega.

Just. YES. My joint favourite with the Michael J Murphy set. If I had to choose one release, it's this. SO. BLOOMIN'. MEGA! Loved it. It's absolutely batshit nuts!

Honourable mentions to the Mexican trio of Indicator discs. Good stuff and nice sets. The extras are worth watching. Do not overlook those at your peril.

As for 2025?

Well... it's been nearly 5 years since Raro Video USA announced it and despite emailing them once a week every week for months a few years ago, to which they never replied, I am still waiting for this. The big one. The Mario Merola hyperfilm....

Well Raro UK? Radiance? What say you? Is this finally coming to my home in 2025? I can but hope.

Here's the opening credits to get you salivating and hopefully writing begging letters to Radiance to get this bad boy released in 2025!
