I don't think it's a major spoiler as it's not what you're probably assuming. Anyway there's not a spoiler alert for the whole article, just a small one before it gets to the real spoiler. Sorry I didn't post a spoiler warning in the first place though. Didn't mean to ruin it for anyone.

This was pretty excellent. Not normally something that I would seek out, but I decided to catch it at the local theater. There were about three people at the showing. A very involving character study, deeply rooted in a sense of time and place. It refuses to offer any easy, obvious critiques or score simple political points. There isn't really much of a narrative, but it's one of the best recent films I can think of that shows a character confused and conflicted about their identity. 8/10

I watched this yesterday via VOD. I found it to be a very honest depiction of what its like to live closeted in a hetero world. This film covers it all, from dealing with the social pressure to be interested in the opposite sex, to internal doubt/confusion and the lack-of-identity feeling, to glimpses of acceptance as well as denial. Technically, this film worked quite well for me. The scoring and sound was effective and the camera work was very personal, utilizing blurred image in a way that takes you inside the characters head and experience his identity crisis.
This is more or less a slice-of-life type film. There are no "big" events or pivotal plot points. This is not a "coming out" film. It's just a glimpse into the struggle of a person trying to understand themselves and figure out where they belong. While the characters in this are about as opposite as possible from what I'd hang around with, I found a lot of what the main character faced to be very relatable and accurate. I definitely recommend it. It's a memorable one. 4/5 Also, this review is pretty spot on as well. https://letterboxd.com/amandaayoung/film/beach-rats/ [Show spoiler]

Hoping so, Peccadillo Pictures can be a bit hit and miss regarding releases. Earlier this year they released The Levelling on Blu-Ray but Closet Monster came out straight-to-DVD. With this getting a small theatrical release, it seems hopeful, but nothing is guaranteed.

4/5.
An all too realistic and sad look at being closeted and coming to terms with your own sexuality. If you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community, some aspect of it will ring true to your own struggle to accept your true identity. |
