No. I've been waiting for DBS to become available in smaller, more economical packaging.

They should've cut the amount of Steelbooks in half. 4 discs per Steelbook would've been fine and prevented stacked discs.

I'm fully convinced at this point there's some higher up who legitimately hates the original Dragon Ball and is blocking its HD release...

Funimation tossed their 16mm elements of the original Dragon Ball. All they have to work with are the SD digibeta tapes that they used to make the DVDs.

Never seen Super. Looks like a pretty nice set, and actually a decent value too.

I really want to get this. I already have all of the standard Blu-Ray copies. But I'm a sucker for collecting Steels.

This isn't a captain peggy carter steel!

But seriously, It's hard to sell a set like this with all the trimmings if they only have it in a few cases. Which they could do without stacking, s has been pointed out.

They weren't thrown out. Friend of mine said they never actually received all the film back in the 90s. Just received the tapes. But, that's not really the problem here. The cost of restoration work was hard enough on Funimation's cash cow, aka DBZ (regardless of the image results). Dragonball is an even bigger challenge cost wise. HD DB won't happen until Toei decides to spend the money. Maybe Daddy Sony will lend the new CrunchyRoll some money for it, but I won't hold my breath. When Toei makes HD DB a priority, it will happen.

Id prefer to have a slipcover set like the Amazon one for DBZ, but at $150 on rightstuff, this is hard to pass up

Any news if this is a new video encode/improvement or can we expect it to look the same?

I'm in! I already have the regular set but I knew this day would come. Be nice to get a steel box for the DBZ steels also.

They didn't clear up anything. Toei never sent out tape masters to foreign distributors, always film.

No offense to your friend but Funimation did indeed receive very nice film prints of Dragon Ball. They eventually scanned them in the mid 2000s to make the SD masters that were utilized for the DVD sets, which in turn have levels of detail far beyond what 90s-era tape masters would be incapable of yielding.

Kineko video has obtained at least one 16mm print that was reportedly cast off by Funimation and posted some rather enlightening comparisons on their twitter: https://twitter.com/kinekovideo/stat...55421398245377

No offense to "your friend" but that's simply untrue. Funimation did indeed receive very nice film prints for the entire run of Dragon Ball. They eventually scanned them in the mid 2000s to make the SD masters that were utilized for the DVD sets, which have levels of detail far beyond what 90s-era tape masters would be incapable of yielding.

I should have been more clear in my earlier post. I was in the Funimation media library years ago. Friend gave me a tour. The incredible number of professional tapes is astounding. A huge portion of the tapes are from Toei. Back when Funimation was starting with this property, they were getting two media deliveries: SD digital tape and distribution film positive prints. This media delivery model was how DBZ was handled, but at some point in the Dragon Ball deliveries, Funimation declined to receive the rest of the film. Cost cutting measure. Much later on, the company investigated doing an HD version with film for DB, but since they didn't have all the film, the project died. There was a series of tests done on the film that was in-house. My friend said they tried 2K and 4K scanning methods. They said it looked pretty good. Everyone was bummed out that the project never made it to full production. So, it still comes down to money. I'm sure there will be an official 4K version of all these shows (DBZ, DB, and even GT), but something new will have to change company leadership's mind to get it going. As for the Kineko samples shown online, I've been told the opening looks like the footage used in the testing for DB, but the recap can't be from Funimation. They never received the recaps in film form. The film from Funimation's media library was transferred to a secure Sony vault. So, either that vault was compromised, or the Kineko film is coming from somewhere else. I'm surprised Funimation and Toei hasn't jumped all over them. Lots of fun stories from the old Funimation. A bit of a bummer they are gone.
