Default Unwelcome (2023)

Quote:
A couple escapes their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland only to hear stories of mysterious beings who live in the gnarled, ancient wood at the foot of their new garden. As warned by their new neighbors, in Irish lore the Redcaps will come when called to help souls in dire need of rescue, but it?s crucial to remember that there is always a dear price to pay for their aid.

A mess. Nice looking but an unhappy mash up of Gremlins and Straw Dogs. There's brutal violence in the prologue and the house invasion but the Redcaps look like Jim Henson creations and the husband is next to useless. Colm Meaney's usually worth watching and most of the Irish members of the cast are decent. If the director had picked Gremlins or Straw Dogs and stuck to the one theme it would have been much better.

Most of the theaters near me only have one showing a day for this. Will try to check it out next week.

This came out back in January in the UK, didn't realise it wasn't a worldwide release at that time. It got a very poor reception from general audiences, some of the critics seemed to like it a bit more.

This was better than I expected. Lots of atmosphere and beautiful shots of the Irish countryside. Enjoyed the score too. It subverted my expectations by
[Show spoiler]making most of the horror come from humans and not the goblins. Using flashbacks as jump scares was also interesting.
The ending was rather nonsensical, though.

There were two girls that walked into the showing right as the movie started and then walked out after they saw the Shudder logo. They then came back like 10 minutes later and left after an hour. Other than that I was the only one in the auditorium.

Funny, i would get this and like it. It's like a Fairytale horror type thing.

I recognized the mother/girl from Ant-Man 2, where she played the glitching Ava/Ghost. Cool.
Unwelcomed was released in the US March 10, 2023, originally moved back from its February 2022 release date. That's some shift, but timing is important. That happened to Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters 3D too back in 2012, getting pushed back a year pretty much.

Thanks Unberechenbar. The trailer looks interesting. Like a slow build horror which is often fun to see IMO if the pay off horror is effective.

Red Caps, while it doesn't show them in the trailer, I'm picturing meat eating red capped mushroom monsters that emerge from the forest at night to hunt the humans or something.

Watched the blu-ray today. I really disliked both leads. The husband was one of the most useless and annoying main characters I can ever remember seeing. The first 2/3 of the film are fairly slow and bloodless with the final third having some creatures and gore. The blu-ray quality was really good but I haven't checked to see what extras it has. Overall I ended up enjoying the film. The creatures weren't scary but it's still nice to see new monsters.
