If it's a good flick and not a watered down Disney-fied, after-school-special account of the extraordinary work these forgotten human "computers" did and more like Apollo 13 and other quality NASA inspired movies then I'll bite.
That Hollywood would wait until January to release a film with three African American leads that would make the Academy skip over their work for Oscar season is telling. Women and especially minorities are pushing back in the industry and the industry may be trying to punish some of them (not one minority nomination for an Academy Award either, even if there were deserving rolls). And no, the Golden Globes don't count since there is more graft and corruption behind those awards than anything else. Ricky Gervais was actually correct in chastising them. Yeah, I had read it in the Jan issue, and it's baffling. I saw another DP saying that even downrezzing from such a high resolution is still better when you end up with a 2K DCP, but why the f would you scan at 4K/6K only to end up with a 2K DCP.
2K is not enough for 35mm, especially anamorphic 35mm that has the highest resolution among 35mm formats (ie 2 perf, 3 perf, 3 perf anamorphic, 4 perf super 35, etc). Considering the film takes place in the 70s though, it's entirely possible they felt a 4K DCP would be too sharp or something, I don't know. |

I simply hate 2K DI - it negates everything that was shot and captured at a higher resolution. It's like going to a restaurant and they ran out of A1 sauce for your burger and you have to make do with ketchup.

I saw this on Monday and its a predictable but solid film (and a crowd pleaser, good amount of applause and positive comments when it ended), though visually pretty bland. |

Why are studios still doing 2K DIs now that we're nearly a year into the UHD format?

I mean, it's not as if full 4K workflow is an affordable reality in the industry (pretty much the opposite). I'm not saying it's not a bad state of things. I'd love for full 4K workflow to be the norm, at least so that UHD BDs could, well, not be at least partial upscales all of the time. But there also are some realities behind this state of things, and that your comparison takes out this very important background. Just my 2 cents. |
