I notice that the Criterion uses 4.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio for disc 3, while the Arrow uses 2.0 stereo. Does anyone know the story behind this and which is correct? Since the film came out before the days of Dolby stereo, I assume the Arrow track isn't matrixed stereo and therefore only uses 2 channels.

Parts 5 & 6 were released with four-track magnetic sound prints, i.e. basically 35mm prints striped with magnetic audio (left, center, right, and mono rear).

From an article in Japanese I found:

Quote:
It was 4 years after the introduction of wide screen that magnetic 3D sound was introduced in earnest in Japanese movies, 1961 (Showa 36). This is in "A Soldier's Prayer Complete Edition (Parts 5 and 6)" (Director Masaki Kobayashi) released on January 28th.

Interesting. Do you happen to know if the Arrow 2.0 track is matrixed (i.e. when decoded, unfolds out into 4 channels)?

Saw all 10+ hours of this in 35mm over the course of a single day. Jesus, what an experience. Essential purchase.

The first time I watched this was with the Criterion DVD release. It during the summer and it was one of my the most beautiful days to go outside. Yet, I watched all three films in a single day. It was nuts. My then fiancee soon left me and one of her arguments was remember that day you spent watching three films back to back? Yes, I sure do.

One of the best films not yet on BD here in the States, I'll happily upgrade my DVD in July.

Only $59.95? It'll easily be $30 on the 50% off B&N July sale. A major steal, definitely getting this.

Already own the Criterion DVD set and the Arrow Blu-ray set. But, I am a huge fan of these films so the Criterion Blu-ray set is a must have for me.

I also literally e-mailed Criterion about this maybe two months ago. One of the very few titles I've suggested that they upgrade that actually worked out.

Have been holding back on importing the Arrow edition for a long time but will likely pick this one up during the next sale. One of many long overdue upgrades from Criterion.

Guessing this will likely be a digipack?

It might be, but Criterion might just put in a bunch of discs in a case similar to the three Samurai films.

Very excited to see this! I saw the film(s) last year and was blown away...Been looking for a sealed Arrow box set ever since, but have yet to find one. I was hoping Criterion would get around to doing a Blu-ray release eventually. I wonder if we'll see a Samurai Rebellion release in the future?

Just noticed the black strip on the bottom of the cover art...I hope that's not there in the final product.
