Wow, this is a loaded question. It's like asking recommendations for Rock music.
There are so many flavors of jazz, from easy listening, swing, bebop, fusion, acid, latin, afro cuban, and funk. With easy access to music on the internet you really just need to dip your toes into what ever style interests you. Personally, I like all kinds of jazz, like I have interests in all music. Here are some of my favorites: Miles Davis: he explored so many different sub genres of trumpet jazz during his career, it's easy to get lost in his catalog. Later in his career his style was more experimental and freeform. Stan Getz: sax extraordinaire, with styles ranging in bebop, latin, bossa nova (The Girl from Ipanema) and other collaborations with some of the greatest musical artists of our time (including rock). Also look for Art Pepper and Paul Desmond recordings - they are excellent as well. Dave Brubeck / Vince Guaraldi: both Californian pianists with unique time signatures and styles that continue to remain popular and have shown even a recent resurgence and interest. Guaraldi is most famous for his work on soundtracking Charlie Brown TV specials. Cal Tjader: Master vibes maestro, who's collaborations in jazz are nothing short of astounding. Probably best recognized for his Afro-Cuban and latin jazz recordings, his career spans literally decades and touches many styles. Carlos Santana has said that Tjader was a major influence in his musical taste and style. See also Bobby Hutcherson Wes Montgomery: Best associated with the West Coast jazz style, his smooth guitar style has been imitated relentlessly, but his work reflects what I would consider a slow simmer with a laid-back style. Count Basic has made his style more popular to younger audiences with a funky groove associated with acid jazz. Creed Taylor: Record producer and jazz influencer who discovered and promoted some of the biggest names in jazz. Just about anything he touched is worth a listen. Verve Records: This dovetails into Creed Taylor since arguably some of his best recordings are associated with this label. Verve has been the go to label for jazz acts during the 50's and into the early 70's. Last edited by quickdraw; 06-10-2021 at 03:21 PM. |

I'm just going to be completely honest here. Jazz is one of those genres that I like to tell people I listen to, to make me seem more cultured, and then I proceed to never listen to it!

For me, my entry point into jazz was Miles Davis. I used the Allmusic.com website to listen to clips and help guide me towards the essentials and it was a HUGE help during this process. After listening to some of his latter day stuff like B*tches Brew and the more frenetic stuff, I decided that I like the "Kind of Blue" era and the stuff around that time. Good luck!
