Surprised there's no discussion for this given that the trailer has been playing on this site. I saw the trailer before Hunt Her, Kill Her and thought that it was from a smaller label and not Focus Features. I'll watch anything with Willem Dafoe in it and if he's the only character that's even more appealing.

I made a thread for this a while back. I posted four times but was the only one in the thread.

Surprised no one seems interested.

I thought it was ok. But as I was leaving this guy was telling his friend it was the worst movie he has ever seen. It took some time for me to get into it, and I was constantly asking why he wasn’t doing certain things. I did like the imagery though and it seems there may be some symbolism here although I really wouldn’t know off the top of my head. So you have to be into minimalist claustrophobic tedious frustrating experience. And also
[Show spoiler] wasn’t the Macarena used as a torture device?

Didn't live up to my expectations. It definitely wasn't as intense as the trailer made it seem. I liked the survival parts, but the movie got more and more abstract as it went on. I didn't understand the statements/metaphors about art, so those parts dragged for me. There were also some other things I didn't understand, like
[Show spoiler]why he was shaking the tree and why he was surprised by the photo of the people on the boarding stairs
The monologue about having chicken for dinner every day was good. I also enjoyed the part where
[Show spoiler]he was licking the refrigerator trying to get water
Maybe I would get more of it on a rewatch. The credits mention that the movie is based on an idea from the director, which I haven't seen before. Someone left after about an hour.

The trailer started interestingly but then this turned into something Id never watch. Looks miserable, LOL. Probably a good performance by Dafoe but it just isnt for me.

Like a modern Cast Away but set inside a mansion, LOL.

It seems like Dafoe had a blast making The Lighthouse, and wanted to make the same movie but by himself instead of with a companion.

This movie was...fine. But I feel like I'm too dumb to understand any allegories/literary references the movie is making.

I had someone leave within 30 minutes.

And there were only 4 people in my theater to start.

I think it is trying to say that Art is the only thing we can leave behind while other things are destroyed with time.

In the story he tells at the beginning only the art survives.

I mean specifically the inclusion of
[Show spoiler]The Marriage of Heaven and Hell
and how that relates to the events within the movie. As crazy as it is, I'm not very versed in 1700's literature. Lol

[Show spoiler]Sorry. In that story Hell is free and Heaven is control. Also there is no progress without contraries, or questioning the status quo. Without progress he is stuck in that room. Art is progress through expression.

I think this is probably one of the best quotes.

Quote:
The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.
The story has a lot of reference to Paradise Lost, which really needs a movie adaptation.

I think another theme that runs throughout the movie is how we can be surrounded by art that's worth millions of dollars but at the end of the day a human being still craves human contact with other people and being able to interact with their peers.

So art, in and of itself, probably doesn't satisfy the most fundamental of human needs - the need for interacting and communicating with other human beings.

Yeah I agree with that, seeing how Willem Dafoe's character spoke to the TV. I wonder if he was an artist himself. I also didn't understand the deeper meaning behind the art in the movie.

Yes. His book was one of the three items and the only one that last. He lost the other items.

Or how an artist cannot eat art. The art being trapped only has value outside of that room.

Yes you have to share the art or it has no meaning.

This was released on Video On Demand today. Looks interesting.

Thread title needs to have Willem Dafoe in it, looks kinda silly being called a random "Inside".
