I'm guessing Ben Kingsley from Iron Man 3 had a child with Ben Kingsley from Sexy Beast.

Bumping this because it comes out in a couple weeks, but so far I haven't been able to find any showtimes near me. I suspect you folks in the EU will probably get to see it before me.
Also because I found out that Nadia Hilker, from Spring, has some role in this. I also just love these kind of european action movies. |

A decent, modestly scaled American-Chinese-German action-crime movie. First and foremost, it delivers on its genre's core promise: involving, kinetic, well-staged sequences of chaos, pursuit, and violence, from a foot chase through a medieval town to the demolition-derby centerpiece set on the Autobahn. The action is frenetic, loud, and credulity straining without ever becoming so over-the-top (or computer-generated) as to defuse the tension. Another highlight: a pair of knighted, Academy Award-winning actors delivering absurdly over-the-top performances as dueling gangsters. Anthony Hopkins plays an outwardly tasteful, poetry-quoting magnate-sadist in a powder-blue suit, and Ben Kingsley counters as a gold-plated, half-lucid, ultra-vulgar drug lord. Neither archetype is new to either prolific actor, but they push the envelope further than usual here, and the destabilizing, scenery-devouring, almost vaudevillian result will sate aficionados of Pacino- or Cage-style emphasis. Nicholas Hoult delivers a competent, straightforward performance as the car-thief hero, his photogenic blue eyes conveying the right amount of anxiety and cunning. Felicity Jones, though, however gorgeously photographed, is extremely overqualified for her thin, mostly-absent-from-the-action love-interest role (this film sat on the shelf for a while, a victim of prior distributor Relativity's financial collapse, and was shot before the release of The Theory of Everything, let alone Rogue One).

This was an enjoyable B actioner - a good way to kill 100 minutes on a weekend afternoon. The story is basically a "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl" line tacked onto a ridiculous drug heist - average to below average writing. The European exteriors are nice and add an element of unfamiliarity. What really makes the movie are the impressively staged car chase scenes, which as far as I can tell, were just about all done practically. All of the actors seem committed to the picture, much more so than the material merits. And I always have a soft spot for Felicity Jones. Hopkins and Kingsley are fine chewing the scenery. 5/10.

Finally watched Collide (free on Tubi with ads for now) starring Nic Hoult as the semi-criminal hero character trying to get enough money to save his girlfriend played by Jyn Erso from Rogue One (Felicity Jones).
Hoult does a good job running and driving from Anthony Hopkins' gang of ruthless armed villains who are after him for a couple reasons. Leading to an epic car chase 1/2 way through Collide. Hoult's character is not too smart with a sentimental choice he makes that compromises his situation, but it's a good action film that totally went off the radar in theaters, and I only saw it playing for 1 week back then. Action is mostly a chase film from the halfway point on. Anthony Hopkins gives a good performance with a bit more controlled anger than usual, and Kingsley gives an interesting performance as a villain leader Geran. Some good action and worth a look for car chase fans. |
