Quote:
Mike Nichols (The Graduate, The Birdcage) superbly directs this cinematic adaptation of Joseph Heller's scathing black comedy novel Catch-22, a tale of a group of U.S. Army Air Forces pilots stationed in the Mediterranean during World War II. There are winners and losers, opportunists and survivors. Almost all are a little crazy. Boasting an all-star cast featuring Alan Arkin (Edward Scissorhands), Anthony Perkins (Psycho), Orson Welles (Citizen Kane), Bob Newhart (Elf), Art Garfunkel (Carnal Knowledge), Richard Benjamin (Saturday The 14th), Paula Prentiss (The Stepford Wives), Martin Sheen (Badlands), Charles Grodin (Midnight Run), Jon Voight (Heat), and many more, Catch-22 is an anti-war satire of epic proportions.

I mentioned this on the other post, but 2025 has been kind to Mike Nichols fans. Carnal Knowledge, The Graduate (overseas only for now), and Catch 22 getting more contemporary releases is great!

Fantastic writer and critic. He's been writing great pieces for well over 20 years. Was one of the better critics working at Ain't It Cool News in its heyday.

Finally, and I'm so god damn glad that they didn't pass this one off to Kino. We're getting this release from an actual competent company.

I’ll second your recommendation. Having watched this in the theater in 1970, it is stacked with actors that live in each of their roles, even the Italian locals in their background roles. Great casting choices top to bottom. And Mike Nichols directs it to perfection. Buck Henry’s screenplay is controlled insanity.

Can’t wait to get this Day One.

This must be one of the best days of the year for many catalog-title collectors. Catch-22 seemed to be one of the most requested titles on Blu-ray, and here it is, straight to 4K.

Have fun waiting. Besides Paramount UK already being a pain to begin with (even disregarding some more recent developments), Indicator haven't had much breakthrough on Paramount licenses with only two actual-Paramount licenses (“Badge 737” and “Bullfighter and the Lady”).

Yes that just leaves Heartburn for me, and I think personally either VS has it with their Cinematographe line, or it's Criterion due to Criterions love of putting out Jack Nicholson films on Blu-Ray they've put out a lot of them.

Well I guess Regarding Henry is the other one still missing in Action on Blu-Ray in the US.

Regarding Henry, and Heartburn

Not only does this have a great cast, including Alan Arkin (pitch-perfect as Yossarian), innovative direction by Nichols, and a tight screenplay from what essentially seems an unfilmable book, but also terrific cinematography by David Watkin, who often worked with Richard Lester and Ken Russell (including The Devils, another long-overdue title). I was really impressed when I saw this is a cinema many years ago.

Gosh Dang this has been they year of Mike Nichols films either coming to Blu-Ray for the first time ever, or 4K upgrades of crappy old Blu-Rays from the studios themselves.

So that makes me wonder what other Nichols titles are we going to get on 4K, and Blu-Ray before the year ends that haven't gotten announced yet.

Here's what's been announced so far, and released, or is being released in a couple of months.

Primary Colors 4K plus Blu-Ray
Carnal Knowledge 4K plus Blu-Ray
The Graduate 4K
Catch-22 4K plus Blu-Ray

So that leaves these titles
Heartburn
Postcards from the Edge 4K
Closer 4K
Regarding Henry US Blu-Ray and 4K release
The Day of the Dolphin 4K
Wolf 4K
Charlie Wilson's War 4K
The Fortune 4K
Biloxi Blues 4K
Angels in America
Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolff 4K
Wit
The Birdcage 4K maybe Kino, or Shout! Factory it is MGM after all

Probably not happening
Working Girl 4K
Silkwood 4K

I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion does Working Girl at some point.
