Paramount Blue Hawaii (1961) (Paramount Presents) 4K UHD coming from Paramount

Quote:
Newly restored in 4K Ultra HD with HDR-10 and Dolby Vision, Blue Hawaii will arrive on 4K UHD Digital for the first time on June 21. Blue Hawaii will arrive on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray as part of the Paramount Presents collection later this year.

This movie critic correctly predicted three weeks ago that Blue Hawaii would appear on digital retailers in 4K on June 21 so it's obvious the source for their information is Paramount.

At last! My favorite Elvis film. I've been waiting forever for it to come out on just regular, old Blu-ray. And now it's coming out on 4k UHD. I can finally retire my old DVD. Now all I need is Viva Las Vegas from WB.

Posted this in the thread for the new Baz Luhrmann movie just yesterday. Funny timing.

This is awesome. I was close to picking up the DVD a few months ago but decided to wait for a Blu-Ray. Didn't expect the announcement of a 4K though.

Two new interviews with Paramount's Senior Vice President of Asset Management (Andrea Kalas) about the the restoration of King Creole and Blue Hawaii:
  1. An episode of the Movie Geeks United podcast:
    Quote:
The Movie Geeks welcome Andrea Kalas, the Senior Vice President of Asset Management for Paramount Pictures, to discuss the new restoration of Elvis Presley's Blue Hawaii, as well as her previous efforts to restore Elvis' King Creole.
    https://player.captivate.fm/episode/...1-2f645520a318

  2. SlashFilm interview:
    Quote:
Paramount Archivist Andrea Kalas On Spiffying Up Elvis Presley's Blue Hawaii For The 21st Century
    https://www.slashfilm.com/905614/par...ury-interview/

In the SlashFilm interview, she says Paramount has recently discovered something and it seems to be related to Blue Hawaii and it will be a "surprise":

Quote:
For a movie like this, I'm kind of curious in terms of supplemental material or cut scenes, was there anything left from the filming of interest in that regard?

There's one thing ... I don't know if I can tell you about it, actually.

Oh.

Maybe a surprise coming up later.

Okay.

I'll leave it at that. There's something we discovered recently that maybe we'll be revealing later. I don't know. I never know what I'm supposed to talk about. So I'm going to just say that.
Quote:
Interesting. Well, I'm really curious about what the thing that you can't reveal is, and I hope that we'll be hearing about that soon.

I'm sure you will. I'm sure you will. So, a little teaser for you. Sorry.
I wonder if this is why the disc releases of Blue Hawaii won't come out until later this year?

Default Were is the blu-ray tto "Blue Hawaii"

The blu-ray release date for BLUE HAWAII was announced for June 21, 2022. It is July 4th as I write this, and there is no release. What happened? Did it get cancelled due to a rights issue with one of the songs (that's what happened to LOVING YOU). If it did, it would be very disappointing, as BLUE HAWAII is very much in need of a restoration and blu-ray release.

The 4k digital release version of the film was released on June 21st. Blu-ray and 4k UHD releases haven't been officially announced by Paramount yet.

I'm hoping they've located the cut scene with the song "Steppin' out of Line" now that would be awesome.

I watched the 4k streaming version and was a little disappointed.
I was expecting a sharper image and better hdr effect but still its MUCH better than any previous releases of this movie.
So overall im happy.

Comparison of Blue Hawaii 4K (4K DI) Dolby Vision vs FHD Version

Keep in mind the opening titles were recreated because that is Paramount's standard practice. Paramount's Andrea Kalas even mentions it in the SlashFilm interview I posted earlier:
Quote:
And in both films, the original title sequences that were optically done in the day ... you film the title over a filmed background. And what that means is, it's extra generations, so it's not as clear as the rest of the movie looks. It's really jarring. You're like, "Why does this title look so bad?" And then, "Oh, but now the movie looks good. Don't like that." So we have what's called a textless element, which is just the image. We scan that, and then we redo the title. So it's seamless now. So that was nice to be able to do for both of those films.
