Dreamworks Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken (2023) [Never in 3D]

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is a new animation film from Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation, scheduled to release in 3D on June 30.

See it in RealD 3D at the end of the trailer:

RealD logo on the poster:

Looks fun, there are some moments that have pop-out potential, looking forward to some good, strong 3D. And hoping RSM got our backs for the 3D Blu-ray release.

Cool, thanks. Underwater and 3D go together great when the 3D is medium to strong as NWave's Sammy Turtle's Tale, Imax Under the Sea, and Avatar 2 have proven as examples.

This trailer reminds me a little of Penguins 3D (the animated movie, Madagascar spin off), and Monsters vs Aliens 3D. Looks like it has potential.

RealD appears to have scrubbed Ruby Gillman from their Twitter. And there's no stereographer credits listed on IMDb.

Still on Instagram.

Seems like DreamWorks is now outsourcing their 3D work to SDFX Studios.

Lana Condor is the voice of Ruby so I hear about this almost every day on her stories since I follow her.

IF This one gets a 3D release it will probably not be widely available in 3D, or very few and not ‘great’ show times. Also opening same day as Indy 5 won’t help (Indy will take away the screens capable of doing 3D in most theaters), this should’ve come out on the 23rd instead imo.

Just asking for clarification, this will be releasing in 3D, right?

Listings are up on Fandango.com and I'm not seeing any 3D screenings. Might be another Spirit Untamed.

Spirit was not animated by DreamWorks in-house, so that might have been why a 3D version was never made.

Comcast the owners of dreamworks animation probably looked at the projected box office total for this movie and maybe it was even less of a money earner than the bad guys or the boss baby 2 (although that one was produced in 3D) and maybe the projected amount is closer to what spirit untamed made so the conversion was scrapped months ago which is sad but remember puss in boots the last wish wasn’t produced in 3D but converted to 3D and so was the bad guys.

Thanks. If true, that's disappointing they're not natively creating a stereo 3D rig in the 3D realm's virtual CGI space to film all of the 3D shots (and 2D shots at the same time), then rendering out both eyes/cameras.

The only good news is Stereo D (SDFX now) is talented with 3D conversions, though it'll depend on what kind of financial budget they're given to work with. The more expensive strong 3D taking much more effort to convert, and costing much more I bet.

I hear if they have the 3D assets, they can offer stronger 3D more easily, as was suggested with Star Wars Episodes II and III (versus ep.I) and TMNT Live-Action 1 and 2 3D from Prime Focus (now DNeg).

It’s their loss if it flops at the box office because they’re choosing to barely advertise these films, the only reason Puss in Boots 2 made money was because of word-of-mouth from how good the movie was.

I wonder if it’s another cancelled conversion or if it’ll only be shown in 3D in certain countries.

If the former, disappointing how many conversions or seemingly planned 3D movies are being cancelled this year. It’s got to be an all time high. It’s a shame with Disney seemingly pushing 3D more that other studios are abandoning it.

As I said before Comcast the owners of dreamworks animation probably looked at the projected box office total for this movie which now has been reported to be under ten million dollars opening weekend. To put it into proportion that is less than half of what elemental from Pixar opened up to this weekend. We all know now that Pixar itself considered elemental opening numbers to be a major box office bomb. So with ruby gillman even if the budget for this film was 90 to 100 million opening up to under ten million which is what it’s estimated to open up to is still a major massive box office bomb as well. Honestly it’s a crying soul crushing shame because it seems like this year for animated films unless it’s a film based on an existing franchise or intellectual property that is already a fan favorite with movie goers like Mario or Spider-Man then all original animated movies are flopping at the box office this year. Heck I fear migration from illumination will probably flop too. anyways back to what I stated before Comcast probably saw the estimated box office numbers for this film months ago decided it was a lost cause and scrapped the 3D conversion for this film because maybe it was even less of a money earner in their own eyes than the bad guys was or even the box office failure of spirit untamed back in 2021. However to be fair to both those films neither one of them was a completely original idea like ruby gillman is case in point being that the bad guys was based on a hit kids book franchise and spirit untamed was a spiritual sequel to spirit stallion of the cimeraon. Also the last film produced in 3D from the very start and not converted to 3D by dreamworks animation was the boss baby 2. Having stated all this maybe they have known for months that the projected amount is closer to what spirit untamed made so they figured why bother spending any more extra money on a film that won’t even make its budget back or will turn at a most a very very very small profit or just barely break even which is probably why the conversion was scrapped months ago. Again it’s is sad but remember puss in boots the last wish wasn’t produced in 3D either but converted to 3D and so was the bad guys.
