Not much of a surprise here. It seems that Hollywood has some sort of strike every 15 years or so, at the very least. It seems to be the only way of ensuring different parties are treated fairly in the business.

I believe that the PGA & SAG are both about to enter renegotiations too.

My hot take: Pay writers more! They are the foundation and the font of creativity. I hope they get what they are asking for.

---------------------------------------------

The union is targeting, first and foremost, compensation for writers in this round of talks. Some of its strategies for raising overall pay for members include setting higher wage floors across the board, standardizing fees for streaming and theatrical films, expanding span protection (which shields writers being compensated per episode from working for long periods on short-order series), regulating mini rooms, and instituting a mandatory two “steps” (points of payment) for feature writers. The WGA is additionally pushing for minimum television writing staff sizes and a minimum number of weeks of employment, THR reported in February.

Artificial intelligence is also in the union’s crosshairs in this round of talks. Amid the rise of ChatGPT and other chatbots that produce written material, the guild has clarified that it will be advocating to prohibit AI-produced or AI-rewritten content from being covered under the contract. Banning companies from assigning writers adaptations of writing originally generated by the technology is also a priority.

Well, the GOOD writers deserve to be well compensated but as with any union, far too many deadbeats and do nothings will get to milk the booby. Things like minimum staff sizes, Trying to lock out technology like AI, forcing minimum employment terms, being against innovation and efficiency etc. reeks of union protectionism crap to me. It also raises costs for the production of content and guess who gets to pay for that?

Ya know….this has to be said. A lot of stuff feels like it could have been written by a 10 year old. I say let the best writers exercise their talents and pay them a nice pile of money. But, let content creators go wherever they wish to get writers. Remove barriers and red tape.

With the opinions vary ratio, if you watch every movie in history. I would say the percentage of good vs bad would probably be the same no matter the decade. Which really has nothing to do with the writing, as a movie is a collaborative effort with many hands.

Yeah that should have already been there. I am having to update all my contracts to firmly reject the use of any AI.

Directors Guild Orders Members to Cross Picket Line In Event of Writers’ Strike
The DGA has a "no-strike" clause in its contract, which promises its members will continue to work even if the WGA initiates a strike over the terms of its agreement with the studios.

I would love to work in the industry as a writer. I'd also love to be an actor or director. Hopefully everything works out.

Is it bad for me to say there are more important elements that go into a work than just the writing? For example: editing. Editing can do anything. It can make a bad script good. A bad actor good. Bad direction good. It can change the entire dynamic of a motion picture or television series. Think of how many movies that have been saved by editing.
