Default Will a 7.1 receiver switch to 5.1 mode?

I'm getting ready to upgrade my receiver, I just want to make sure I don't also have to upgrade my 5.1 setup.

Thanks

Default 7.1 to 5.1 and 5.1 to 7.1

You should not have a problem with that!

I have a yamaha 7.1 and it switches depending on how the source is encoded.
Not only that even if you have a 5.1 setup and the source is 7.1 you should not have any problems at all.

At least that is what I've experienced so far.

you tell the receiver not to use any "rear" surrounds. It simply ignores those channels.

You'll be fine with 5.1 speakers on a 7.1 receiver.

I have an Onkyo 804. It's 7:1. Yes I know it's a few years old, but it sounds great. My question is this. For some reason, if a movie is in 5:1, the rear sound comes from the middle two speakers instead of the rear speakers. Can I disable those two middle ones and make the back ones play in 5:1 so I don't have to just use five speakers?

A lot more movies now have 7:1 surround sound, and I would love to hear it. I'm just tired of trying to reposition the speakers for movies that aren't in 7:1. As it stands, I don't have the number six and number seven speakers hooked up. it's killing me. I want to hear 3:10 To Yuma in all it's glory.
