Quote:
The mid-nineties were a fertile period for the vampire movie. Big-name stars such as Tom Cruise and Eddie Murphy flocked to genre, as did high-caliber filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola, veterans Wes Craven and John Landis, independents Michael Almereyda and Jeffrey Arsenault, and up-and-comers Quentin Tarantino and Guillermo del Toro. Amid the fangs and crucifixes, Abel Ferrara reunited with his King of New York star Christopher Walken for The Addiction, a distinctly personal take on creatures of the night.

Philosophy student Kathleen (Lili Taylor, The Conjuring) is dragged into an alleyway on her way home from class by Casanova (Annabella Sciorra, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) and bitten on the neck. She quickly falls ill but realizes this isn’t any ordinary disease when she develops an aversion to daylight and a thirst for human blood…

Having made a big-budget foray into science fiction two years earlier with Body Snatchers, Ferrara’s approach to the vampire movie is in a lower key. Shot on the streets of New York, like so many of his major works – including The Driller Killer, Ms. 45 and Bad Lieutenant – and beautifully filmed in black and white, The Addiction sees the filmmaker on his own terms and at his very best: raw, shocking, intense, intelligent, masterful.

I just watched both Bad Lieutenant and Dogfight for the first time and thought that the both of them were very good, and who doesn't like vampires? Now I'm actually glad that I couldn't stretch my budget during the most recent BN Arrow sale, and consequently had to leave the BD version of this one on the wish list. Oh well, I guess I'll have to get this new UHD version instead.

I generally will use the original covers on these Arrow releases, but I think I kind of like this new one.

Good film. Should look nice in hdr, despite being filmed in only black and white.

My copy arrived today. Production notes say that Fidelity in Motion worked on the DV grading. Will watch this tonight or tomorrow. It was a good haul day.

The Funeral is the same production company, weird that's never got a decent BD release even.

Fidelity did the grading but not the encode, which was by the Engine House. The reverse art is of shockingly poor quality.

The reverse artwork is the theatrical artwork. This was an extremely low budget film - 500K.

Thought the black and white cinematography looked gorgeous on this transfer. Creates such a unique atmosphere. Quite prominent but well-resolved grain too. Watching in DV. Exceptional stuff and a fantastic edition.

Walken is always so good in Ferrara's films, even with smaller roles like this one.

Haven't watched this yet, still got a few Ferrara to get to before I hit '95, but popped in the disc to flick through and it looks a sublime disc/transfer. I could have assumed Arrow would do an incredible job as usual, but its always nice to see that triple confirmed.

If anyone can upload a loop of the main menu onto YouTube, that would be awesome. Love that bass of the Schoolly D song, would love that on repeat.
