I'm happy that this is finally getting a release in Germany, though I dislike the German titles. they could've at least made a cover with the original title of the movie...
and most important information: it is the Shout master from 2014 Database links: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/South...lu-ray/320593/ https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/South...lu-ray/320597/ https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/South...lu-ray/320596/ |

The Shout is fine. Its slightly zoomed in from 1.85 to 1.78, but also shows a little more on the bottom, so the "missing" image from each side is negligible and doesn't change the composition at all. It's the best version to get, and won't get a new remaster.

Won't get a new remaster? How so? Some Walter Hill titles have either been restored in 4K or have been announced in 4K. Why shouldn't Southern Comfort get a better remaster? The shout master is already 8 years old. I'm certain someone will pick it up one day and give it the treatment it deserves

1.85 vs 1.78 is mostly neglectable. In most cases 1.78 shows more top and bottom that would be masked out with 1.85. Very rarely would a 1.78 version severely crop from 1.85 unless it's something like 1900 (1976).

I don't care if the difference is negligible, it's how Walter Hill and Andrew Laszlo filmed it. Composition matters. People still say Sony's reframing of Bram Stoker's Dracula doesn't matter but it plainly breaks up the symmetry of some shots and alters the framing composition of the rest. It sticks out like a sore thumb and it happens here in the 1.75 of Southern Comfort. |

After the info about the Shout master disappeared from the website, I asked Turbine. They said that info was old, that's not the Shout master. It's the same one that Second Sight used, but with a better encode and without manipulated color grading.

So will it look better in the end? I guess I'll pass this release and wait for a new remaster. Both masters are very old. And Hill movies get 4K treatment nowadays it's only a matter of time until this title gets a decent upgrade. I can wait. Don't want to double dip

Received my Turbine disc yesterday and my thoughts are that this is definitely an upgrade over the UK SecondSight release! Not sure, if that more pronounced grain is in fact natural, but it isn't static. So my guess would be that it really is natural grain, which makes the other releases DNRed....
And I also acknowledge the fact that the Turbine release doesn't retain the OG aspect ratio, but I have to admit it doesn't bother me much, since in comparison to the SecondSight release you're actually getting MORE information in the top and bottom of the frame- and the difference between 1,78 to 1,85:1 is only marginal IMO. So no biggie by my standards. The additional grain enhances the viewing experience by making it feel more organic. Last edited by Rollo Tomassi; 08-09-2023 at 12:41 PM. |
