Default what's the rule for matching speakers?

i know people tend to have different manufacturers/styles for fronts, centers rears etc.

but are there certain ones that must match, or can all of these speaker components be different?

if they can be different, does it provide better sound if they do match?

thanks in advance

It is better if they are from the same manufacturer, specifically the same product line. For instance, in a movie when someone is talking and they move off screen, their voice will move as well. If your speakers are different, then the tone and everything else about the voice will change as it pans from speaker to speaker. This is also very important in gaming as you are constantly changing direction and orientation while you play.

QFT. In a utopian system, all 7 speakers will be the same manufacturer/model to avoid any change in tone or timbre during pans. In the real world, this is very seldom practicable, and the best compromise is as MacDaddy suggested above - same manufacturer, same model line.
