Metrograph Pictures (via Kino distribution) will be releasing Éric Rohmer's Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle (1987) on Blu-ray on November 21st. This is in addition to The Aviator's Wife (1982), and Boyfriends and Girlfriends (1987), which are also coming in November.

Shot quickly in and around Paris during a production break on Rohmer’s The Green Ray (Le Rayon Vert), Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle is a breezy, witty film that traces the exploits of two young women—one an ethnology student from the city, the other an unsophisticated aspiring artist from the country. Reinette and Mirabelle (played by Joëlle Miquel and Jessica Forde) become instant friends upon meeting in the first of four vignettes that make up the film (“The Blue Hour”), and in their first two days together, they decide to become roommates in Paris. Throughout the three remaining stories, they encounter many of the inevitable characters of a modern city: the impossible waiter (“The Waiter”), the Metro-station hustler (“The Beggar, the Kleptomaniac and the Hustler”), and the snooty gallery owner (“Selling the Painting”).

I basically said the same in the Aviator’s Wife thread! New commentary & new restoration! I absolutely adore this film and couldn’t be happier.

I don't think the Comedies and Proverbs box has this one? At least I hope not, since it's why I paid for the original Arrow set on ebay after it was OOP! I might have to get this one for the commentary also, though. I've enjoyed Kim's criticism in the past.

Since I don't know you, I can't tell you whether it's worth it for YOU. But, it is worth it for me because Rohmer's work is so important to me. In fact, after listening to this commentary (by Kristen Yoonsoo Kim), along with the ones on Boyfriends and Girlfriends, and The Aviator's Wife (by Adrian Martin), I decided to purchase 3 books on Rohmer's films to learn more. (All 3 films released ny Metrograph Pictures.)

Ms. Kim provides an interesting, well-researched commentary, and clearly has lived in France and been immersed in Rohmer's world. However, the first 15 minutes or so, she sounded a little awkward -- as if reading from a script. But, gradually she became more relaxed. Adrian Martin's commentaries are more polished and conversational-sounding, and he also has clearly done his homework on the films.
