For the past few days the 1986 movie "The Wraith" has been on special for $4.99 in Tunes. I really enjoyed the movie when I first saw it but I haven't gotten it yet because of the rating.
I remember the movie being rated R but the version in iTunes is PG-13. I did search for more info and I found out that the movie is currently owned by Lionsgate which released a 'Special Edition DVD' of the movie in 2010. And if you check the movie out in iTunes it's the Lionsgate version being offered. As it turns out the movie was indeed rated R when it was first released but later the movie was re-edited for a PG-13 version. But now here comes the interesting part. The 'Special Edition DVD' was reviewed by IGN in March 2010 and contrary to the PG-13 rating stated on the box and disc, the movie is supposedly the R-rated version instead. So this makes me wonder if the Lionsgate version in iTunes the same as their DVD release. Is anyone able to verify if the iTunes PG-13 version is actually the R-rated version?? If anyone has both the Special Edition DVD and iTunes version, can you compare them to find out? |

![]() If the iTunes or Lionsgate version includes topless nudity of Sherilyn Fenn, then it might be the R-Rated version. |

From what I understand, the movie was given an R rating just before it's official release (with some states receiving this version). However, the movie company changed it's mind before the main roll-out of the movie and re-edited the movie for a PG-13 rating instead.
Guess they thought that a lesser "family friendly" version would generate more money for them (which is still a practice current movie companies use today). A variation happened with the movie Streets of Fire. The original rating was PG-13 (I even taped it during a free movie weekend many many years ago and it carried this rating). But on DVD, it's now PG. A movie company are allowed to re-submit a previous movie in hopes for a newer lower rating for their movies. Anyway, the Wraith is still on special. So I hope an answer will appear before the price change. |

Sometimes, movies gets re-classified and at times their ratings are given up for reasons that the movie companies only know. The IMDB does state that the nudity was removed so that they can get the PG-13 rating (listed under "Alternate Versions") for the previous home video releases. That's why the Lionsgate edition is an interesting one. jbloggs, this is the reason that I am asking about the iTunes version. Does the iTunes version contain the nudity scenes just like the R rated version does? If it does, then any other scenes should be included also. |

Then it came out, it was PG-13, and when the love scene happened, I was like "Well, hello there!" ![]() |

Regardless of rating, the only version I’ve ever seen is with nudity. Whomever can say it was ‘reclassified’, but there is only one version thus far, and that is the version you’re going to get with any purchase. You have to remember, mpaa ratings used to be a lot more lenient...
Doc Hollywood is also PG-13, but contained nudity (Julie Warner)... |

The 80s was not like today. Naked scenes did not get you a R rating then. Family films clash of the titans and sheena both with kids toys, kids comics and other things had full nudity and no one batted a eye. Red sonya also. Jaws had the girl swimmer at the start and was PG. Disney movie dragonslayer had a naked girl swimming and disneys baby secret of the legend had nudity also. Heck R rated film police academy (with naked woman scenes) was such a big hit with kids it turned into PG by movie three and turned into a kids series by 5! Titanic in the 90s was pg-13 and had the naked scene.
Curse words were the same. The goonies cursed like sailors! Short circuit does to. It was a looser time for films. (on the other hand dreamscrape and dungeonmaster had a naked scene also but cut them to be more kid ok. So they did cut out some of them.) |

I have never seen a version of this movie without nudity, unless you count a viewing on broadcast TV that I saw. I saw this in the theater and several times on VHS back in the day, it was PG-13 in the theater, which is why my parents let me go see it. I have also had the DVD and Blu-ray, both had nudity. Not sure where this mysterious version without nudity exists.

The Wraith was co-produced by Canadian firm Alliance Communications (later becoming Alliance Atlantis) with Vista Organization. Producers Sales Organization/Tristar Pictures were set to release it in the US and was originally submitted with an R-rating. New Century Entertainment (having bought Vista) became the new distributor after PSO ceased operations and being their first picture they had to resubmit it to the MPAA shortly before release (despite having been submitted with an R prior).
New Century did a recut that trimmed the love making scenes and two of the goriest shots, but accidentally sent the original cut back in to the MPAA. The MPAA strangely enough, gave it a lower PG-13 without any cuts requested. The PG-13 recut AFAIK was only ever seen on early video copies and old TV airings, while most video versions and the current HD master is the original cut despite carrying the PG-13 moniker. |
