Specifications haven't been listed yet, so I don't know. LSP Medien (the excellent German lab Carlotta primarily uses for their UHD encodes) sometimes re-grades SDR masters into HDR Dolby Vision for them (such as Farewell My Concubine, Dragon Inn, A Touch of Zen), while others (like In the Realm of the Senses and Ichi the Killer) were kept in SDR. No exact reasoning was provided for any of these films and why they chose what they did. Perhaps down to finances (return not worth it) or licensor request. If/when Criterion releases Yi Yi on UHD (PLEASE), we'll probably know if this was HDR graded or not.
Personally, unless an HDR re-grade is very carefully done and is able to add to the presentation in a way the SDR isn't, I'd rather stick with native SDR. In an ideal world, HDR would be a toggle you can flip on and off to get them out of the same image, but that's obviously impossible. As an example, while I'm sure LSP's encode and re-grade of Farewell My Concubine is good given their track record, Criterion's UHD is already outstanding, with a superb encode and the SDR grade is flawless as-is, the restoration enhancing such a gorgeous movie to new heights; WCG usage and tasteful HDR might be enough for me to double dip (along with knowing if they fixed one shot with some really bad automated cleanup). |

Carlotta coming in with another heavy hitter. As for their HDR re-grades, I'm a fan of the 3 I have (Concubine, Dragon Inn and Zen). Apparently people are also big on their TCM release but I haven't buckled down and bought that yet.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong, and don't be afraid to call me stupid and ignorant in such case:
I don't think the video in the new restoration trailer is from the new restoration. All colors and skin tones look faded, pale and dull. Or is this how the movie is meant to look? |

Maybe I watched on the wrong monitor. Or maybe I was expecting a look more like Drive My Car or Perfect Days (I know, digitally shot films, unlike Yi Yi, but we are talking about colors).
Anyway, forgive me if my post was stupid. |
