Disney's presentation flew the Blu flag even moreso than Sony's. From this reel, you really get the perception that they are 110% committed to the format. It lasted for a long time and was the only reel to specifically name all of the other studios also backing Blu-ray Disc. It also specifically and openly mentioned HD DVD, and trumpeted BD's superior capacity and data transfer rate. Not only this, but it acknowledged customer's fear of backing the losing format, and explained that they should worry no longer, safe in the knowledge that they have "picked the right format" (I believe those were the exact words).

Ahem... It's great to see the studio's are viewing downloadable content the same way most of us are....an interesting idea that has a LONG way to go. And hearing about the strong support the studio's are putting out, especially Disney, is something that many feel the BDA has not been vocal enough about...

Anyway, how is the DVD market in Europe? Was there any talk of Blu-ray adoption vs. DVD adoption over the next few years? The situation is clearly different in US than across the pond (or vice versa) so I would think the pressure to DVD would start earlier in Europe. Any talk or your thoughts on this?

Well, Stephen (from Disney) mentioned at the start that the focus now should be off of Blu-ray vs HD DVD, and on to Blu-ray vs DVD - he didn't phrase it in those words though, I don't think. Other than that, DVD wasn't really mentioned, apart from when the BDA people refuted Toshiba's upscaling argument.

I believe at the rate BD software sales appear to be going here, it may actually be growing faster than DVD did in the same time - but that's just a hunch of mine and nothing official.

Edit: yes, it's official. The BDA's own words: "BLU-RAY DISC SALES ACROSS EUROPE
REACH TWO MILLION UNITS // Blu-ray disc faster to reach milestone than DVD-Video"

Sales of Sony Corp’s Blu-ray movie format have passed the two million mark throughout Europe this week, reports the Blu-ray Disc Association European Promotions Committee.

According to data obtained by Media Control Gfk International, Blu-ray sales in the region totalled 2.4 million, with 79 per cent of all high definition movie sales so far this year attributed to the Sony platform.

The BDA commented: "DVD-Video was first introduced into Western Europe in 1997, and the following year some 230,000 DVD players were installed and 2 million discs were sold through.”

"In comparison, Blu-ray Disc made its first tentative launch in Western Europe in 2006, and the following year some 3.2 million PlayStation 3 consoles and 34,000 standalone players were installed, while 2.3 million Blu-ray discs sold through.".......
