Hey im new to the blu-ray experience and im kinda confused. Maybe its me but im noticing alot of grain in some movies(hostel 2, 300) . Is this normal? Someone told me to turn my sharpness down to zero. I did this and the picture looked flat and dull. help please!

First, welcome to the site.
The "grainy" picture your seeing in these movies is what was intended by the directors, that is what they wanted their movies to look like. Especially 300, it is perfect for that movie, gritty........ |

Welcome.
Grain is part of the film itself in most cases. Images on film are formed from the grain, similar to how pixels make an image on screen. With the resolution of HD (blu-ray), the grain on some films becomes visible while on SD (DVD) it is not. This is normal and has its advantages (allows details in dark scenes for example). In fact some films, like 300, add artificial grain to help hide the large amount of computer graphics used in the film. It is a very clever and successful way of hiding computer graphics and adds a certain quality to the film as well. Just enjoy the fact that the image is so in focus and detailed, that you can see the grain for the first time. This is the closest to film home theaters have ever gotten. |
