Default Question - Aspect Ratios (1.78:1 & 1.85:1) PS3/Samsung

I have a question regarding aspect ratios. Don't worry, this isn't one of those "why do I have black bars" posts! Equipment: Samsung LN-T4061F 1080p LCF and the PS3. My query is, why do I not have thin black bars on discs with aspect ratios of 1.85:1? Obviously 16x9 aka 1.78:1 movies have no black bars, but I was surprised to find that 1.85:1 movies fill the screen as well. The easy answer is overscan, but I know for sure that the Samsung is set for "Just Scan", which is the setting to turn off any overscanning. So is the PS3 doing this slight overscan on 1.85:1 films? I did not see a setting in the PS3 menus to correct this, unless I am missing it.

My guess would be that the black bars are there, they're just very narrow.

I'm guessing that it's likely they are opening up the frame just a little bit to create the full screen effect on a 16x9 TV.

The black lines would only be a few scan lines, so you wouldn't really see them. Trust me, all is well.

They are there, but very very small.

Notice how close these are? They are almost the same so the black bars will be very small.

ALSO, some HDTVs have an automatic "zoom" setting. THis means that they will, by default, be zoomed in on the image a small amount. This is because when people watch an SD channel, or an HD channel displaying an SD image, there are funky lines at the top and/or bottom of their image. It looks weird and is distracting, and it often moves around, but it is restricted to the very very top (or bottom) of the image. To get rid of these, the TVs have an auto zoom that will remove them.
You can turn this auto-zoom off and you will see the full image. Yes it will cut off the thin thin black lines you should see with it on, and turning it off gives you the full real quality of the image.

on a true 1.85, yes the bars are very small

However the vast majority of 1.85:1 films they just open the matte slightly to 1.78:1

Remember to go into your TV if you do not see the black lines at all. Check to see if there is any kind of zoom setting. If you see it, make sure it is at 100% or Full, if not, check with the manufacturer. The XBR series does have this, and when i had my TV calibrated, the professional calibrater adjusted this setting for me.

I have Samsung too. I set the screen size mode to "just scan" instread of 16:9. When I was watching "Galapagos", which is in 1.85:1, I noticed thin lines at the top and bottom. In the mode, you will see movies wider (with thicker black bars) than in 16:9 mode. I perfer the mode because it enables you to see the original screen. So... you might want to experiment with "just scan" mode.

On a 40", the difference is negligible.

However, small is relative to your screen size though

Man I feel like a fool, I just got home and popped in We Own the Night again (it's 1.85:1), and sure enough, the bars were there all along. Like someone above posted, they were too thin for me too notice in the darkness. Thanks to all and sorry for wasting time! I could have swore there were no bars at all last night when I watched this flick!! Ugh.

If the display has overscan of 4% or more you won't see bars on 1.85 films (1.85 films will fill your screen). If the display has overscan of 7% or more you won't see bars on 1.66 movies (1.66 films will fill your screen too then).

Not to mention that otherwise it's rescaling the entire image and therefore potentially adding distortion!

That is one lame feature. By default, a 1920x1080 input should be slapped right into the 1920x1080 pixel grid with no changes made.

Yeah, it is the overscan on the tv. I hate overscan especially when you connect a computer to your TV (the TV advertises the feature).

If you have a windows computer you loose the whole blue bar at the bottom (the one with the start menu) and you loose the top so you cant see the red x to close anything).
