I ordered a "Edition Collector Edition Spéciale" from fnac under the hopes it was the collector's edition on the Jokers Shop website (fnac never updated their product details or product images). They shipped it over the weekend and I was surprised to get an alert from DHL that it was delivered today. Opened it up and sure enough, it's the Collector's Edition. Looks nice. No English subs though I suppose I really ought to learn Cantonese anyway. Not sure about Shanghainese.

Transfer is the same as the Criterion version. The titles & text benefit from the added resolution. HDR is quite nice. But the resolution also makes some of the image processing (noise reduction, sharpening, banding) more apparent. Still a gorgeous movie. The disc only has French subtitles.
The photo book is quite nice. There are two extras on the Blu-ray movie disc (which is indeed Region B locked) that I don't recall from the Criterion set. A 16-minute tour of Thailand (I think) with Chris Doyle, and a 26-minute featurette with some early 2000s interviews with Wong Kar Wai, Michelle Reis, Maggie Cheung, and Tony Leung. Thankfully, these are all in English. There's also a 17 minute English-language featurette on the bonus disc that's also in English that I don't think is on the Criterion. |

I wouldn't say it's transformative, just a nice addition. But I've never really been a huge HDR guy. I don't necessarily miss it when I watch SDR content, but can appreciate it when it's there. Perhaps I'll do a more direct comparison.

The french release is a post processing nightmare, filled with DNR smoothing out all the detail. It's a terrible transfer compared to the german release which looks a lot closer to film.
There's more detail on the US blu-ray than this UHD release, it's really that bad, and in motion it looks even worse, very wobbly due to the DNR. |
