Default Lars von Trier - L'integrale - Fnac exclusive Nov 7th

Fnac has posted a listing for an upcoming complete Lars von Trier set to be release in November from Potemkine as a Fnac exclusive. The list of extras is enormous. Here's hoping that the French subtitles are removable and that Potemkine doesn't screw up the encoding!

I don't know what the difference is. FNAC and Potemkine.fr are using the same UPC: 3545020084878.

That UPC doesn't yet work on Amazon.fr but there's is listed as a Potemkine release.

Many french releases are branded as "Fnac exclusive", it doesn't mean anything, I own a lot of them and they're available everywhere.
It's possible that some of them have truly been exclusive, I couldn't say for sure, but I think this is just Fnac adding their brand to product pictures for visibility, maybe something that started with some actual exclusivity arrangement.
The Lars von Trier set is available from Potemkine, this is where I'll be getting it.

What do you guys reckon the odds are that there will be English subs on the extras?

Yeah, I know that for example however, for CDs of music, fnac will have exclusive cover sleeves that in other countries are exclusives to say, hmv, Target in the US etc. For movies however, it might have been specific steelbook designs, but for this box it's anyone's guess.
I don't own any work of this director but know of many of those movies and I wouldn't mind purchasing the box but I'd need to know which version is best.

Received my copy from Potemkine directly today.
I had high hopes after they put out a few great BD releases in the past and the excellent Lost Highway UHD fully sold me.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news though: The encodes are terrible, almost Curzon-level bad. It’s ironic as I’ve attempted to escape the curse of Curzon and their terrible BD releases (Wim Wenders set) by going with the Potemkine, yet here I am. What makes this even more sad is that apparently Curzon stepped up their game and delivered a solid von Trier set themselves.

The shot-on-film films fare the worst with significant macroblocking in nearly all areas of the frames - from highlights to normally bright portions. The blocking is visible in motion and even stronger in caps. This is not a bitrate issue but something in the encoder settings. I have a strong feeling that these are the most basic autopilot encodes.

The digitally shot films are better but still imperfect. Dogville looks good, Melancholia absolutely terrible, The House that Jack Built solid, The Idiot solid and so on. It’s terribly inconsistent. It’s admittedly a little difficult to spot encoding issues among some of the anomalies inherent to the sources but if you know where to look at, you can see things.

It’s a damn shame as I’m not sure we’ll see too many other LvT complete sets coming soon.

How is Dancer in the Dark? Also, do any of the films have English subtitles?

The existing Dancer blurays frequently sell for (nearly) the cost of this set alone on ebay, so assuming it has a good transfer, getting this set for just that film seems plausible. If any of the content not included in the curzon boxset has english subs, I'd probably bite, but I doubt it does.

No English subtitles here. Dancer in the Dark looks okay, it‘s really nothing special to be honest. All films share the same, lazy encoding. The Digital features like this hide the flaws quite well. A member on Criterionforum mentioned that all the Potemkine discs have been set to a standard bitrate of 30 MB/s whereas the old German Koch BD of Dancer in the Dark runs at 35 MB/s. I have the German BD too but the difference is forgettable due to the digital nature.

I‘d say it’s a pick your poison situation here, especially for the price.

I bought the German Dancer in the Dark for less than £13.50 this month from Momox so keep an eye out for it https://www.amazon.de/dp/B00KHK1T5S/

I know it ****s with the color, but just from the screen shots, I like the look of the Japanese edition best.

I already have the DVD and the German release looks like only a minute improvement over that.

A lot of Von Trier's later films look crap whether it's DVD or Blu-ray.

I've seen several of them in the cinema and they looked terrible and I thought to myself "I'd be as well to watch this at home on VHS or DVD". I'm sure he intended some of them to look crap too.

I've only had a flick through my UK set and German Dancer in The Dark and I'm not expecting any miracles for the later films when I eventually sit down to watch them.

You can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig.
