Blu-ray Ninja

![]() ![]() Netflix's first Korean production. Banking off that zombie craze brought back by Train to Busan. I binged this today, and very much enjoyed it. There isn't a whole lot in the way of story and character development, but it's just a fun action/epidemic type of show. It's violent and has some great action scenes with the zombies, and I enjoyed the political betrayal storyline of it. It leaves you on one heck of a cliffhanger though. Only six episodes though, which I found to be a breeze. It's only supposed to be two seasons from what I hear. Anybody else watched it yet, or interested? |

I've watched 1st episode so far. It is quite decent. The Korean girl (Doona Bae) in Cloud Atlas' (2012, w/ Tom Hanks and Halle Berry) was in it.
The story itself is not special IMO but the costumes, palace politics, and visuals are well done. A zombie king, entitled queen, out of touch ministers, poor starving peasants/citizens with near-absent healthcare . . . so what's changed since then? |

I really enjoyed it, spectacular visuals, good plot, surprising last minute development. A couple more episodes would have been welcome as it seemed to jump over narrative points at times rather than develop them. Did it have to end on a cliffhanger? It's going to be a long wait for series 2.

Bumping because the feature-length special Ashin of the North dropped on Netflix today (in the US at least).

Thought this was a solid spin-off/sidequel. It's got somewhat less zombie action, so be advised that it is true to itself in the sense of being adjacent to the main series.
Given the significant success of it, I would sure hope so. I really hope that we soon begin getting this and more series from Korea on Blu-ray. It's a missed opportunity in my opinion given how mainstream a number of series have gotten. |

A game based on the show/manga is coming out soon and a playable demo is now available on PC (Steam). The game will also be released on Android and iOS platforms.

Netflix owns the whole thing outright and has - in the eyes of the Korean production companies - become exploitative towards their Korean partners, who make the actual content. This is because Netflix often foots part or all of the production funding in exchange for distribution rights and/or control over whatever IP is being made and that money allows the Korean production companies to produce HQ content, but often leaves them with little profit or benefit in the end.
