So it already supports DD-HD and DTS-HD...but apparently only via hdmi.....correct? Remember this same member couldn't figure out how to get the tray to open on a new Philips player...because he did not read the instructions....and took it back and claimed it was broke. ![]() Thats why I am asking here ![]() |

have to look at system specs and see if it has analog outs. if it does, the player can decode the audio and output it as pcm over the analog outs... as long as it has analog out

Yes 24p has been confirmed. BUT.. Page 6 of the manual states TrueHD and DTS-HD discs only give you DD and DTS.

does it state what version of hdmi it has?
im willing to bet the player will decode these, it's just outputting them over hdmi to a receiver rather than the player decoding them |

From page 6 of the manual: - When playing a DTS-HD disc, the player decodes or outputs only the DTS audio stream. - When playing a DD+ or Truehd disc, the player decodes or outputs only the DD audio stream. This is fine as long as pcm tracks are added, but I would assume that as soon as Truehd/dts ma recievers are commonplace, pcm tracks will disappear. |

Remember that you dont get PCM out of the analouge outputs, you get analouge
![]() PCM can only be output digitally. Is it possible that the user manual is refering how the player handles the sound today, and that the software upgrade will enable the sound to be output over HDMI at a later time? |

First, this player is easily the best looking unit of all BD and HD DVD players out there at the moment. Top-notch, first class quality all the way, and the remote's not bad, either. Setup menus look nice, too, unlike the low-quality menus on the Panasonic player. Boot times are a little sluggish, but still not as bad as the Toshiba. Definitely the slowest BD player out there so far. I simply swapped out the Sony for the Panasonic and fired the system up.
The trouble is, setup menus are about the only thing I could get the player to display onscreen. That and maybe a BD disc's startup FBI message. Once you hit actual video, like a menu or a movie, the screen goes black. Nothing. You can hear the audio through the receiver, so you know HDMI is working like it should, but no video at all. And when you lose video, you can't even go back to the player's setup menus. You have to power off then back on, and that, again, is a sluggish process. This is terrible! I'm connected with HDMI from the player to my Pioneer VSX-82TXS receiver and then out to the TV. While trying to figure out what was happening, I decided to plug the player's HDMI directly into the TV, bypassing the receiver. Sure enough, I get picture, but the sound now is only coming from the TV's little speakers, which is definitely not ideal. So, obviously, there is some kind of conflict between the player and the receiver, which is odd, since the receiver is a Pioneer and, IIRC, they had a hand in designing and/or building the Sony player. I at least wanted to see how DVD playback was, but I couldn't even do that with HDMI fed through the receiver. I had the exact same issue with DVDs as I did with BDs: audio, but no video through the receiver. And I spent over an hour on it, trying to figure it out, but couldn't. Needless to say, unless I can figure out what I'm doing wrong, the Sony player is going back and I am keeping my Panasonic. Maybe I got a bum unit, but I'm not going to bother to find out. And it's a shame, too, because it's got the looks and build quality of something that might cost $1299 while the Panasonic has the looks and build quality of something that might cost $799 at best. An absolutely beautiful piece of equipment, if only it would actually output video. |

does your TV have an optical or coaxial out that you can run to your receiver instead?
does anyone know if the hdmi chipset was upgraded to 1.3? is it possible that your receiver is not compatible with the resolution you are trying to display? have you tried a lower resolution just to see? since you have the panasonic, i assume you know what you are doing. may as well ask. |

theknub, I tried lowering the resolution, but to no effect. Direct connection to the TV works fine, but no video pass-through via the Pioneer receiver. What's odd is that I can see static images, like the player's setup menus and the startup FBI warnings on Fox BDs. But once you hit full-motion video, like menus and the movie, the screen goes black.
By contrast, the Panasonic and Samsung are models of plug-and-play simplicity. |

Now, maybe the Sony player that I have is running slightly older firmware than some of the other units people have picked up. Regardless, the player already went back to Best Buy because after an hour-plus of fiddling with it and not getting the desired results, I realized I shouldn't be trying this hard. The Sony goes, the Panny stays, and now I've got my eyes on the Pioneer prize. |
