Default Coda (2021)

I’ve noticed that the limited edition 4K and blu ray editions of “CODA” that were released in Italy in late May, apparently come with (SDH) English subtitles, which is excellent news, as this appears to be the only available HD release of this film anywhere in the world right now.

However before I rush out and purchase a copy, I was hoping someone who has the disc could confirm for me that the subtitles are both for the spoken and (more importantly) the signed dialogue communicated in the film. Hopefully this is the case, as I would love to own this film on physical media (and be able to understand the signed parts). Thanks in advance.

Both the BD and the 4K (EDIT: only the 4K - see the second link) have both English SDH subs and English subs for sign-language only:

I noticed that Japan had a release on of CODA on Blu-Ray but with Japanese subs. So glad that Italy doesn’t have Apple Plus, per se, or we would not have got this release (first Best Picture winner to not get a Blu-Ray/4K release somewhere).

Should be a provision of winning Best Picture. The winner must have a distributor willing to do a Blu-Ray/4K release. I know it’ll never happen/be enforceable, but it would be nice to know who don’t have to subscribe to a streaming platform to a Best Picture film, on home video.

There are still five Best Picture winners that have not made it to BD anywhere in the world (ironically all owned by WB which released them on DVD):
  • The Broadway Melody (1928/29)
  • Cimarron (1930/31)
  • The Great Ziegfeld (1936)
  • The Life of Emile Zola (1937)
  • Around the World in 80 Days (1956)
(Edit: And not for lack of HD masters; four of the five are available on HD at purchased streaming sites, though those masters may not be BD quality. Only The Life of Emile Zola is limited to SD streaming.)

In addition, Hamlet (1948) has appeared on BD in other countries but not the U.S.; its last U.S. release was on DVD by Criterion. CODA is currently the only Best Picture winner never to have received a physical media release in the U.S.

Though I am an Apple TV+ subscriber, I just ordered the Italian 4K from iMusic in Denmark, which has it for significantly less shipped to the U.S. than Amazon Italy or even eBay sellers. It needs a U.S. physical media release, particularly on UHDBD as it's only the second Best Picture winner with a 100% 4K-plus digital workflow (6K cameras, 4K DI); Parasite was the first. (No Country for Old Men & Argo had 4K DIs but were shot on film; every other Best Picture from Crash on has used a 2K DI.)

What did iMusic charge to ship? Actually I am in Thailand. Amazon Italy wants 23 euros to ship here, and tacks on a 15 euro deposit for customs. The actual duty would be about half that. Unfortunately this would be about two dollars above the duty free limit for Thailand, which charges for a total of item value and shipping cost.

iMusic.co (in English, possibly targeted at the U.S.) charged US$6.49 for mail shipping (PostNord Tracked) to the U.S., on top of the US$27.99 price. Not sure what their charge would be for Thailand, but considering they still use low-cost international mail to the States (something Amazon's European sites largely seem to have abandoned) I have a feeling their rate to Thailand will be more reasonable.

I was quoted only express courier options to Thailand. When I switched to shipping to the US the option you used was added. I guess I am out of luck using them as Amazon.com.it is significantly less for me. I will have to keep looking.

Just bought the IT 4K Blu ray off Ebay rarewaves-outlet. Amazon IT is charging 14.42 GBP to ship it to the UK costing £30.57. Got it for £20.57. Money saved

Thanks for the heads up. I bought this from them as well for the same price and they only added £2.99 to ship it to Thailand.

Anybody interested to know this. The opening credits of CODA is in fact in Italian unlike the Apple TV+ version which is in English. I'm guessing the closing credits will be in Italian. The 4k is mastered in 1000 nits and MaxFall is 800+ nits and MaxCLL is 300+ nits. I haven't got the means to do a BDInfo.

Those of you bought this disc, how is the picture quality? Are English subs correct?

About the Blu-ray:

PQ is gorgeous, the 2nd Edition has a healthy av. bitrate of 30.0 MBit/s.

There are a handful of typos in the subtitles in the first 30 minutes of the film:
[Show spoiler]

After that, the subs are error-free.

Die BD is still available for EUR 12.99 at Amazon.it, 4K at EUR 19,99.

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply. One thing please. What you mean by second edition? It has two 4k releases?

But as the opening credits consist of only the main title, "CODA: I SEGNI DEL CUORE" and "presentation" credits for Vendome and Pathe, " Vendome Pictures e Pathe presentano" "Una produzione Vendome Pictures in associazione con Pathe" this isn't a big deal. As you have most likely discovered, the end credits are in English. But there are some Italian credits for the Italian language dubbing following these.

Indeed. I checked the end credits for the apple tv+ to see if it had apple tv+ plastered everywhere. Not so. Its copyright Vendrome Pictures.

Just out of curiosity, did the movie get a apple tv+ release in France or Pathe released it on cinemas?

I just meant the 4K/BD and BD release from May 2022. Sorry for the confusion.

The initial BD release from February 2022 w/o English subs and lower bitrate is also still available.

The IMDb claims an internet release in France on August 13, 2021 and another release on April 23, 2022 that implies a theatrical release. But it also lists the release in Thailand as occurring June 10, 2022 (internet) which I know to not be the earliest release here as I personally saw in in a two different Bangkok theaters in early January, 2022.

I was curious about the international distribution rights after seeing it theatrically in Thailand and found this article. Although physical copy release isn't noted, it does state that the rights in Italy are held by Eagle Pictures and the first trademark at the head of these discs is in fact Eagle Pictures, followed by one for Pathé and then Vendôme.

Unlike the dialogue, none of the singing is dubbed into Italian.
