![]() ![]() Note: The back cover and disc art both claim that the audio is lossy Dolby Digital 5.1. It is in fact lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1. English subtitles are English SDH and along with the Spanish subtitles, are in a small, thick white font. The only extra is the film's trailer, although trailers for other Bleecker Street films are included as previews. BDInfo scan Code:

Finally got a chance to watching the Blu-ray and I noticed there's an aspect ratio change discrepancy during the middle of the film as the disc is first showcased close to the 2:2:1 aspect ratio then shifts close to the 1:2:1 around the midway point. I don't ever recall witnessing this sudden change when watching it on the big screen.

The film is supposed to be 2:1, what is the aspect ratio that the second half seems to be in on the BD? I saw the film online at the virtual Sundance last year, so unfortunately I don't know how it was theatrically exhibited, but I don't remember it having an intended aspect ratio change when I saw it. |

The aspect ratio change is intended and was projected theatrically. It switches to 2.6:1 or thereabouts for the last act.

I don't recall an aspect ratio change when I saw it theatrically (perhaps I was too caught up in the story), but I did notice that there seemed a point midway where the director switched from still to handheld camera shots.
It hasn't been mentioned yet that this was one of the greatest films of last year. The last five minutes or so when [Show spoiler] . That part really hit me hard.

That would actually be 2.20:1 and 2.75:1, you only use a colon once in each, to separate the horizontal from the vertical dimensions.
![]() However, according to the packaging, the film's principal aspect ratio is actually 2:1, not 2.20:1. 2:1 or 2.00:1 is the increasingly common widescreen aspect ratio in the digital era, giving a cinematic feeling without sacrificing quite as much screen real estate as conventional "scope," which confusingly has three commonly used dimensions - it started as 2.35:1, was later changed to 2.39:1, and is commonly rounded up to 2.40:1 |

Wicked impressive that this is Kranz' directorial and screenwriting debut.
I've come to expect such oversights from AMPAS but there's something wrong with our nominating committee process when these levels of performance aren't nominated even by SAG. It would be very hard to enforce but it seems to me some kind of viewing requirement is in order, as it sure seems to me an issue here was folks just not seeing the picture. The Acad's docu branch I think shortlists pictures first then requires voters see them in order to vote. Perhaps something like that is in order but it would be difficult to implement even without COVID and, again, nearly impossible to enforce. Just very frustrating when something this strong arguably doesn't get the aud it deserves. My experience is likely not uncommon: I read about this picture in the trades, knew it was supposed to be a knockout, aggressively attended screenings . . . but once it didn't get SAG or AMPAS noms it got de-prioritized compared to seeing other nommed perfs and pics. As usual Film Independent's Spirit Awards bring attention to deserving, smaller pictures that might otherwise be ignored. Pleased with this picture's winning the Robert Altman Award ("Award given to one film's director, casting director and ensemble cast"). And yes, as I think has been clarified in subsequent posts that AR switch is intentional . . . and narratively significant. All four principals leave that centrally-positioned table, retreating to their own (emotional) corners. The wider AR better shows us that distancing. I dig the way, on their way back to forming a new circle with Ann and Jason, Martha sits in Ann's former chair and Reed sits in Jason's. Brilliant. Also love the avoidance of easy religiosity/conversion at the end for Jason's character: He may enjoy the sound of the rehearsing choir from afar but--even though we push in towards the door leading upstairs as though he might go up--he symbolically declines the invite to proceed upstairs. After yesterday's horrific events, I still feel that this is the film that should've won Best Picture and one that depicts the conversations that are happening all around us right now. A conversation that'll sadly keep going on but one that needs to be heard especially right now.

I’ve got this disc but yet to watch it. Is it really dramatic as in depressing or engrossing?

I know I'm very late to respond, but I just saw this film last week. It is more engrossing that depressing, to me. Yes, the topic is deeply sad, but the film moves briskly through many emotions and it's low-key thrilling wondering where it will go next. At the end, I felt sad but not depressed. If you want a school shooting movie that will leave you depressed, try AND THEN WE GO.

I was browsing Hamilton Book just now and saw that Mass is listed there for just $4.95, so wanted to drop a plug for it in this thread. It's such a well-done, if heavy, film and is certainly worth it at that price. I got it for under $10 in a Target B2G1 sale and I thought that was a great price, but Hamilton's price won't be beat, I'm sure!
