Disney is going back to the world of Aladdin, its 1992 animated classic, with a live-action prequel.

The studio is developing Genie, a live-action comedy adventure that is being written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. Tripp Vinson is on board to produce via his Vinson Films banner.

Aladdin is a centuries old Arabic folk tale that got the animated Disney treatment in 1992 with the movie in which Robin Williams voiced the blue-skinned Genie.

The movie told of Aladdin, a street urchin who finds a lamp that unleashes a Genie that grants him three wishes. A love interest and a sorcerer figure into the proceedings.

The new project would focus on the realm of the Genies and tell how that one Genie ended up enslaved in the lamp.

Although Genie is just in the early stages, the long-term plan is to have the project lead into an Aladdin live-action movie.

Vinson, an exec producer on this summer’s hit San Andreas, is producing Bob the Musical, Disney’s music-inclined comedy which Michel Hazanavicius is directing, as well as Prince Charming, also for the studio.

Shannon and Swift made their mark early working on horror movies such as Freddy vs Jason and the Friday the 13th remake. But they segued into comedy, working most recently on the Baywatch movie project and O’Lucky Day, which has Peter Dinklage attached, both at Paramount.

Not to mention he'll be Black Adam in the Shazam movie. While I'm not too keen on an Aladdin prequel, I'd be interested to see what they do with it.

Dwayne Johnson is the only choice to be the Genie, yes.

They should get a comedian for Genie... someone like Steve Martin or Steve Carrell. If this Genie is going to be similar to the animated Genie, people will be expecting him to be manic, so someone like Jim Carrey might do.

I hope they go their own way, though, instead of trying to replicate Robin Williams' Genie... no one, not even Dan Castellaneta, could do Robin's Genie. That was his and he's gone, so they should go a different way.

Johnson can do comedy and I'm a fan of his, but they should aim for an actual comedian.

I'm a little torn over this. For anyone who first saw "Aladdin" as a child, Robin Williams didn't just voice the Genie; he was the Genie. It seems disrespectful, for Disney to pursue a live-action version so soon after his death.

On the other hand, there's only one comedian I can think of, who would give that character a similar quality: Jim Carrey. Go back and look at his earlier hits like "The Mask" or "Batman Forever", and maybe even "The Grinch". He could easily make the character his own while honoring Robin's depiction at the same time.

I'm surprised they're making this tbh. Trying to sell an Arabic-inspired film (albeit one based on folklore or myth) to an American audience as its primary market? I can't see that going down too well. Probably why they're going for the non-descript genie angle as opposed to an Aladdin - the character himself - prequel story. I guess all overt cultural references will be smoothed over in order to make this palatable for audiences.
