from their most recent newsletter:
"The big news today is we've started a 4K restoration of Frank Capra's timeless forgotten man drama Meet John Doe (1941) starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. Release date on both 4KUHD and Blu-ray is likely this fall. Below is a "restoration in progress" clip from a recent 4K scan." UPDATE: Today we have made public the difficult decision to cancel the 4KUHD for Meet John Doe (1941). While this isn't something we even remotely anticipated, the extremely poor pre-sales for the release leaves us no alternative. The Blu-ray and DVD releases of Doe are still on, but with a revised street date of April 30th. These releases will still be derived from our 4K restoration of the beloved Capra film, but 4KUHD produced discs are upwards of 3 to 4 times as expensive to produce as standard Blu-ray making our chances of recouping that extra cost from sales very slim. All orders placed at ClassicFlix.com for the 4KUHD of Doe have been canceled. All those awaiting shipment of the Doe 4KUHD on an order with other titles purchased have had the Doe 4KUHD removed from the order and the remainder of the order shipped. If you'd still like to pre-order the Blu-ray of Doe you may do so by clicking any link on this page or by clicking the image below. Thank you for your understanding. UHD is more than HDR. What a silly comment, but alas, comments like this (and lack of support for titles) is why people's precious physical media is almost dead. Enjoy that later, when you wish you'd supported these companies when you had the chance.

I guess you failed to read my post. Let me reiterate just so you don’t have to scroll up. Nowhere did I say I wouldn’t buy them. I said it’s a deterrent. I want to buy them but I have a very difficult time justifying and paying $30+ for an HDR-less disc. Don’t place words in my posts that aren’t there.

You are clearly objecting (since that's the definition of 'but') and I placed no words other than what you literally wrote. I certainly read it and her no need to scroll up. Sorry you have a hard time "justifying" spending money on a 4k remaster of a classic, HDR or not. As I said, and is well known, HDR is not the be-all-end all. It's a nice addition at times, depending on the aggressiveness of the grade, but doesn't make or break a film, especially in black and white. Can't wait for it. |

HDR is a gimmick. A movie that looks normal and true to the source and intended look of the film is what's important. People are too spoiled today and think everything needs HDR. No.

I’d rather Meet Joe Black.
When are we getting a UHD, or even decent blu ray, of that classic? |

This certainly looks better than the one that CHELSEA RIALTO STUDIOS recently released (according to the trailer at http://www.chelsearialtostudios.com/latest_releases.htm)
The CRS release looks really dark to me. This Classicflix example looks much better. |

In my case, I’m not concerned about the lack of HDR for classic cinema, but I hope you will fix the aspect ratio for both versions (4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray).
![]() The ratio is now 1.33:1 (pre-1932 ratio) and should be 1.37:1 (Academy Standard Flat) for a 1941 movie. That is, black bars with just 220 pixels each (440 for 4K UHD), instead of 240. For example, your blu-ray edition of T-Men has a perfect 1.37:1, as Warner Archive Collection has been doing for several years now with all Academy Standard Flat movies (from 1932 to 1953) Besides, I imagine it will start with the Warner Bros. logo from 1941 (in the public domain versions it does not appear). |
