United Kingdom Fuller at Fox, Five Films 1951-1957 (Eureka MoC)

Quote:
SYNOPSIS
A towering figure of American cinema, Samuel Fuller was a master of the B-movie, a pulp maestro whose iconoclastic vision elevated the American genre film to new heights. After the major success of The Steel Helmet, Fuller was put under contract by Twentieth Century Fox after being impressed by Darryl F. Zanuck’s direct sales pitch (other studios offered Fuller money and tax shelters; Zanuck simply told him, “We make better movies.”).

Over a six-year period, Fuller would produce some of the best work of his career, (and therefore, some of the best films in American cinema), an uncompromising series of masterpieces spanning multiple genres (the Western, the War film, film noir, the Crime-Thriller) that would establish the director as a true auteur, whose influence continues to be felt today.

Collected here are five films from this fruitful period, all presented from stunning restorations. The impossibly tense Korean-War drama Fixed Bayonets! (1951); the outrageous and confrontational spy-thriller Pickup on South Street (1953); the Cold War submarine-actioner Hell and High Water (1954); the lushly photographed, cold-as-ice film noir House of Bamboo (1955); and the audacious Western with a feminist twist, Forty Guns (1957).

Is there a chance they use the 4K master for Forty Guns or it is guaranteed to be the old edition?

That's exactly my situation and exactly what I'll be doing. Will probably horse my TT of House of Bamboo though.

I have a suggestion for a unique extra if it can be put in somewhere though. How Do I suggest it to Eureka ?

I mean, I'm a little annoyed about having to double-dip on three MoC titles I bought on day one but I mean...it is Sam Fuller. I jumped at the chance to get the Indicator set and I'm very, very keen to get those upcoming Criterion titles (I usually wait for a sale for Criterion).

A deal-breaker for me would be A Fuller Life as an extra. A bit of a shame they couldn't include China Gate (most likely due to contractual stipulations from Paramount). Hope they can release that one separately anyway (I'd be surprised if they don't).

A Fuller Life is an extra on Criterion's Forty Guns.

This is an amazing set - for those who do not have three of the titles that have been released for the past few years.

I am conflicted about this one. Sam Fuller is one of my favourite directors - but I brought Pickup on South Street, Fixed Bayonets and Forty Guns the moment they were made available by Eureka (Moc). I would love House Of Bamboo, though.

I am not sure that it is a smart move on Eureka (Moc) part to be selling this as a set. There should be an individual release option for those who already have the titles.

Yeah, it hasn't had a UK release so that's largely irrelevant...

Yes, in my opinion they should have released House of Bamboo and Hell and High Water separately, and maybe done a box set later on when their rights were expiring. Perhaps they considered that but figured more people would be annoyed if it was done that way around.

Still, makes you wonder why they did the box set altogether just for the two titles. From what I've heard this will have a very thick booklet, but I reckon it should have some upgrades to the extras too, and maybe even update the transfer on Forty Guns. I'm sure we'll find out some more info tomorrow afternoon!

There’s always the French release. Not extortionately priced.

Still though, this set is a nice “starter” set for those just getting into Fuller. Sure, for many of use we own most of, if not all, the films in the set or just want the two TT ports but it gives people a chance to discover a damn fine filmmaker.

Yeah, was gonna get that but now I'll wait and see. It could be part of this new MoC set, or coupled with China Gate when that inevitably gets a separate release. Will wait and see...

^^ It certainly would be nice to have it included somewhere. Here would probably make most sense.

I’ve toyed with importing the TT of HAHW a few times - the TT Bamboo disc is faultless, and I have the other three MoCs - that being said, I’m a sucker for this sort of set, and as you say, hopefully we’ll get some new extras and perhaps a new transfer to sweeten the pot.
