Appreciate this was all posted in the UK thread, but I felt it deserved it's own thread....

In the live stream they said based on a new OCN scan provided by Universal and worked on by LSP. If I got that right, something newer than used on the current 4K releases - they were rather confident that it will best the existing releases at any rate (and I didn't smell bs, but I have doubts re. new scan, but I think that's what they actually said). It will include the workprint as an extra based on a VHS provided by John Woo.

It looks like Plaion licensed Kino's extras with Woo and Lance Henriksen but went the extra mile re. all the cuts. Why couldn't Kino do the same thing? They were in contact with Woo but likely didn't bother about anything but his master approval in order to release their UHD as soon as possible. Really disappointing but that's exactly who they are.

Question being, if you also saw the stream: What do you think they said?

And later one: "It's a completly new scan of the OCN from Universal, that they (Universal) provided to us and that was extensively restored here.

Make of that what you will. I still think the most likely option is, that this is the 4K-Master of the US and UK-Version with some work work done by LSP. Whatever that "Restoration" work.

I also don't doubt it being the best one, but how much better remains to be seen.

Will find out in March for sure, but why would Universal themselves release a UHD in UK and than create a new 4K-Master and provide that to Plaion. I just can't see that happening.

A VHS digitization of a workprint is not a selling point for me.

Pretty good price for all that. Seems like a better package for people who don't watch UHDs, it mildly annoys me when all the other cuts are only 1080p I rarely watch them over the better disc, that extended Waterworld cut hurt the most it should have been in 4k. 88 Film Supercop is how to do a set right.

For the price of 50€ they could've included the sequel with Scott Adkins as well

Should be pretty difficult because except Charles Rettinghaus (Jean-Claude van Damme) and Sabine Falkenberg (Yancy Buttler) the other main voice actors (Klaus Kindler (Lance Henriksen), Leon Boden (Arnold Voslo) and Joachim Nottke (Wilford Brimley)) are all dead.

Vosloo was dubbed by Ingo Albrecht. He is still alive and active. But yeah, Nottke and Kindler won't be possible for obvious reasons.

Plaion got access to the OCN scan files Universal has and created their own 4k HDR master. Technically it will be different than the Kino/Uni transfer but not a new scan and all from the ground up.

They also reportedly did a new master of the R-rated cut from the same source, while the main 4k was confirmed to the unrated version.

I hope that someone who's got the Plaion release can provide us with some info about the transfer and ideally a BDInfo scan particularly for the audio. I really like Plaion but they sometimes tend to overtly compress the audio, which hopefully isn't the case here. I also hope / expect that they use the more dynamic 5.1 from the Universal UHD release instead of the 5.0 in a 5.1 container á la Kino.

For comparison, BDInfo of the UK / IT Universal 4K:

Does the uncut version only have German audio in the extra bits?

The unrated cut always had complete audio since the R2 DVD and the same applies here. The US cut was trimmed of certian violent shots and no new or unique dialog was done for it, so the dubs can easily sync to it.

Kino use the theatrical DTS track, since it was already a digital track I don't know how it can sound anymore dynamic than that. Are you talking about the LFE Universal pumped up on their 5.1 mix? You can turn up your sub volume knob for the same effect.

Yes, I mean that Universal 5.1 track on their UK/IT 4K. I had no idea about this and just went after what’s been written in that release’s thread. The assumption that Universal took another (better) track for theirs actually led me to buying their 4K but thanks for letting me know.

Does anyone know if there's much of a difference between the UK release and this German Plaion release? (Just in terms of being cut and sound quality. I don't care about extras).

Thank you.
