Default 1883 (Yellowstone prequel) - Paramount+

https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/yel...al-1234901944/

Quote:
The prequel, “Y: 1883,” follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is described as a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana.

The show will debut on Paramount Plus in 2021, with a special sneak preview set to air during the Super Bowl this Sunday. It will be executive produced by Sheridan, fellow “Yellowstone” co-creator John Linson, Art Linson, David Glasser, David Hutkin, and Bob Yari.

Why would Paramount want to let Universal have something related to probably their biggest/most prestige TV property though?

I fully expect that once the Peacock dead expires, however long it's set to last, Yellowstone will end up only being available on P+ like Disney with D+ and WB with HBO Max.

I hope they put the original series also on Paramount+ at some point. I tried watching it on Peacock's so-called "premium" subcription (which comes free with my Comcast Internet service), but gave up because I find 4-5 ad breaks per episode unacceptable these days (I'm largely used to ad-free watching).

Hot damn they've got a nice cast.

Funny that a FNL movie cast member (Tim McGraw) and a FNL show cast member are on the same show lol

I bet Paramount's kicking themselves for letting them have it and then eventually starting their own studio-wide service, I'm sure it'll eventually make it to P+ but it depends on how long Peacock has streaming rights.

After so many classic westerns, it still weirds me out to hear gents in today's westerns swearing like modern teenage girls.

David Milch actually commented on this. I cannot remember if it was a Deadwood documentary or if it was an interview/podcast.

The reason for the modern profanity was because the terms used at the time came across according to Milch, (and I am paraphrasing) as a bit silly on screen, such as 'Tarnation' and 'Goldarn'.

An interesting titbit to share.

Thanks for mentioning that.

I wonder if actors could deliver YoSemite Sam-style lines like that in a serious way.

If not for the over-the-top delivery and surreal zaniness of Looney Tunes, would YS still be silly? Even if it were, sometimes silly sells: Tombstone is full of cheesy lines & deliveries but they're iconic.

Seems to me that a director could make it work, since there are more than a few works that managed to make using invented profanity work out without being super hokey, such as Firefly.

Maybe I'm just old-school, as Westerns had their peak popularity when they weren't writing their characters with Eric Cartman's vocabulary. Not that I'm against Cartman, but the only way I think I could accept a character in an 1880s period piece sounding like him is if it's an episode of South Park involving time travel

I'm like yourself, I watch old Westerns and the quaint language doesn't bother me at all. I do think it can be done right, with the right director.

Me, you and others who like Westerns are always going to watch something like Deadwood, even this Yellowstone 1883. I suspect they aren't as confident with people who can take or leave Westerns and likely feel the lack of profanity, or what people know as profanity would put a huge chunk of the audience off.

I actually hate when they market a Western as being tough and no nonsense, not like those "old" ones or they have a quote from some idiot reviewer saying something like "This ain't your Dad's kind of Western". Actually, Dad's Western were ****ing Badass.
