Default Do you find yourself watching new films or revisiting old ones more often?

I rarely watch a film I've already seen because there is always so much new material I feel compelled to see, but a lot of the time I feel like I'd be better off re-watching something I liked because I know I'll enjoy it.

I have an absolutely massive queue of material that I've never seen before, but honestly, I think I'd rather just watch Batman Begins, Indiana Jones, or Jurassic Park again.

Both. I try to watch as many new movies from each year as possible, but I also revisit older movies. Whenever I watch an old movie it's with friends that have never seen it though. I won't re-watch something by myself too often.

Older ones, certainly. There was a period a while back now (before I got into Blu) where I just wasn't enjoying movies very much and was even, you might say, "going off them". This was largely because I was concentrating on renting new movies. These days I'm much more into older titles - even in some cases older movies that are new to me - because I generally enjoy them much more. Certainly there's the odd exception or film I'm looking forward to, but for the most part 80s and 90s and even 70s movies are more enjoyable to me than most of the modern stuff.
Clearly I'm getting old.

Always watching something new, unless it's a movie I've seen before that I purchase for the first time. If it's around Halloween or Christmas though I watch tons of old favorites.

Always watching something new, as in stuff I haven't seen before. There is so much out there, it often feels like a waste to me if I watch something I've seen so many times. Still a numerous amounts of classics or well regarded films I haven't seen. It's always great finding something new I love. Always watching new stuff helps improve and broaden my taste as well as having better knowledge with film in general. Since I don't blind buy and only buy movies I like, there are many movies in my collection I haven't re-watched since I've bought them. However there are always those days that I am really in the mood for certain favorites of mine.

Find myself more and more wanting to watch older movies specially ones that came out when I was younger. Really like the 70's 80's and 90's films a lot. Know its cause of getting older.

I hardly watch new films since my disappointment in them grows and grows. I am always amazing and pleased when older film are released in the improved BD format. So much more detail on every level unfolds. I have re-discovered so many. I have found some much more entertaining with hind sight. I have been really taken back by the production values and pure talent missing from today's films.

Special effect may not always be as convincing or real as they are today, but I feel they were more "magical" and held the wonder of "how did they do that". Today with the answer being so common as CG the "special" in effects isn't.

I found acting, and especially the writing much more memorable as well.
Stories were more original in concept and the restrictions of the day in terms of what was allowed forced both writer and director to over come the limitations.

Cinematographers too were better. Considering that everything had to created through camera either though lighting for waiting for that right moment on nature is simply amazing considering the on screen results - today it mostly, "We'll CG it in post."

Today's films are little more than video games minus controlers.

Besides the technical aspect there the style - more grittiness doesn't make a better story or film. Sometimes it just unpleasant to watch, it certainly doesn't inspire, and isn't always entertaining. Movies were meant to entertain. Documentaries are meant to inform and record life and reality.
When a line is crossed to much, or becomes to blurred, for me, the entertainment value suffers.

Can't really disagree. There is still the odd gem here and there, and I think the action genre has improved slightly in the 10s from what they were in the 00s, but horror and comedy (two of my fave genres along with action) are in a particularly sad state right now.

I don't want to live in a world where my experiences are just repeating things I already know and nothing else. I love revisiting great films, but I love finding new ones as well. There is a practically endless number of films I've never seen, and I have no chance of ever seeing even all the great ones, and new great ones come out all the time (even in a bad year if you look). How could I ever stop?

Definitely both. I re-watch older movies for the content, new movies for the effects and/or content if it's there. However I watch mini series like The Pacific and Band of Brothers just before Memorial Day weekend.

I love exploring something new, but to be honest at the end of the day I just enjoy putting my feet up and watching something I know I'll enjoy. If it's right after work and I'm with friends we tend to be more interested in discovering films we've never seen. But when I'm by myself I definitely dip into my collection. It is why I buy them after all

Absolutely both for me. I can watch Mean Girls every day and never get tired of it. But there's always stuff like Ex Machina coming out that I just have to see (jeez, July 14 can't get here soon enough!).

There's also so much stuff that is older -- sometimes by many decades -- but new to me. And so I need to investigate those as well. What I generally do is become compelled by a director whose work I don't know, but whose reputation I do, and dive in. There are always films coming out that I am excited about, whether they are blockbusters (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, for instance) or little films which aren't going to get much press outside of film blogs (Neon Demon).

Sometimes I will do little mini-marathons, like all the Fincher Blu-Rays I own, or every Keira Knightley movie I have. But all you need do is look at my Sig to see that there are a number of films that I'm VERY excited about coming out this year (hopefully).

So, like I said, both.

A mix of both. I'm sure I have a whole lot of movies in my collection that are recent that I haven't even watched yet mixed with a good few I have.

Well, considering that over a 1,000 films are released in the United States alone EACH YEAR, I am pretty sure that you are referring to only a tiny handful of action blockbusters. What about the other 99.9% of the films?

And cinematographers were better? Really?

Roger Deakins, Christopher Doyle, Mark Lee Ping-Bin, Emmanuel Lubezki, Jeff Cronenweth, Wally Pfister, Edward Lachmann, Manuel Claro ... I could go on and on and on. Are you serious with this?!

ETA: Here are two links you need to click on if you really believe what you said about cinematographers:

9 cinematographers you need to follow on Instagram

7 more cinematographers you need to follow on Instagram

I love revisiting movies i've seen but for the past 2-3 years I've only been watching titles that I've never seen before. Mainly because my watch pile is stupidly huge (about 500 titles!). For example, this year out of about 120 movies i've watched 2 were re-watches.

love finding hidden gems

Are there new films being made I look at cinema listings and see reboots and remakes for the most part?

Yes. I do watch new movies, but I keep coming back to old movies before year 2000. There are certainly exceptions like Edge of Tomorrow, I've never lost interest in it, and the Star Wars prequels and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Cast Away, Kung Fu Panda, etc.

The OP wasn't old versus new, but films you have seen vs. films you haven't, correct? I don't watch many new films, but watch a lot of films I haven't seen before over repeat viewings of one I have...
