In the Twitter replies, LCQF say there won’t be forced subs.

Missed this in the cinema last year (Picturehouse were showing it only a handful of times at times I wasn’t free), and in spite of the number of (largely archival) extras, I think I would rather watch the film in 4K than get the BFI release, as much as I love them as a label. 4K is the one format where extras don’t matter as much to me (feel the same way about LCQF releasing Bayan Ko with English subtitles - though if it got a UK/US BD with extras I might opt for that instead. Unsure on La traque, Camera Obscura only has one short extra and weren’t able to license the rest, so UHD may be the way to go.)

Even if they can’t give us The Devils, I’m really happy to see LCQF taking risks with the titles they release, provided the elements are available. Though the Zeitgeist US BDs like The Falls with additional short films do look nice.

It’s cool quite a few Greenaways are popping up on UHD outside the UK, as with Drowning by Numbers with Severin. Don’t know if A Zed and Two Noughts or The Belly of an Architect would be upgraded, but we’re really overdue at least remastered BDs of Prospero’s Books and The Cook the Thief His Wife and Her Lover. Glad Indicator released The Pillow Book. The UK BDs of Goltzius and the Pelican Company and Eisenstein in Guanajuto are also OOP so could do with a reissue.

Been meaning to watch this film for a long time, as my copy of the DVD didn’t work, I’d lost the receipt and had to bin it and swallow the cost!

Just speculation but I could see Severin releasing this. They’ve shared other releases with Le Chat (Faceless) and just released another Greenaway film on UHD (Drowning By Numbers).

Can’t see it happening when Zeitgeist are handling the US Blu-ray.

Interesting, I missed that announcement. That does make it seem unlikely, unless Severin or someone else got exclusive rights to the UHD in the US.

I wonder if it was possible for BFI to release this in 4K instead of just Bluray last year. Very much a missed opportunity imo, unless somehow they don’t have the UHD rights to it.

BFI are now scared of UHD outside the genre space. Seems they were burnt early on (Seventh Seal?) and a missive came down the pipeline not to do it again... And so here we are, a small French indie label showing them up on one of the most famous films in their own catalogue.

Got my copy today and did a little spot checking.

First of all, at least in the bits I sampled, I can confirm that subtitles are NOT forced.

Also, though I'll reserve any opinions until watching the film in full, I looked at both the UHD and BD and I will say that the colors are drastically different between the two, with the UHD looking FAR more muted than the BD, which is much brighter and more colorful. Interesting.

I watched the UHD in HDR and thought it looked stunning with rich colors and wonderful grain. Subjective, of course. I didn't watch the BD though.

Yeah, as I said I am not stating any opinions about whether it looks good or not, just noting that it looks quite different.

I received this today and can't confirm. As in not at all. And re. muted, if anything, it's the other way round and the BD is more muted. Sooo... really don't know what you were looking at.

Some random samples to prove my point:

BD (upscaled) | 4K (100 nits)

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

7.

Are your BD caps from the BFI BD? I have this edition and definitely plan on watching it before eventually getting the UHD. I have a broad range of what films I can appreciate but what I’ve seen of Greenaway showed me my limits.

Great for all of his fans that this is the second 4K disc arriving remarkably close together.

No, the BD caps are from the Le Chat BD that came with the 4K.

This is a stunning UHD, thought the color and grain looked excellent! Le Chat hasn’t let me down yet. Happy to have this in my collection, definitely one I’ll want to revisit.

Anywhere to buy this other than their website? I can't find it on any of the usual importers, nor on ebay.

I might be wrong on this, but I think it is exclusive to their site. Also, it is a limited edition 4k UHD( 1000 copies) so once it's gone, no more will be pressed.
