Warner Bros Deathstroke Movie (dir. Gareth Evans)

DC Villain 'Deathstroke' Movie in the Works from 'The Raid' Director

Gareth Evans is in early talks for the film, which would center on an assassin played by Joe Manganiello.

Quote:
Warner Bros. is giving the DC villain Deathstroke the leading man treatment.

The Raid director Gareth Evans is in early talks to write and direct a solo film based on the assassin, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The film would be a starring vehicle for Joe Manganiello.

No deals have been completed with Evans or Manganiello. The actor was previously cast as the villain in Ben Affleck's solo Batman film, back when Affleck was both starring in and directing The Batman. It is unclear if he will still appear in a solo Batman film, which director Matt Reeves is now helming.

Deathstroke was introduced in the comics in 1980 in New Teen Titans No. 2. The character, whose real name is Slade Wilson, is an expert assassin with super strength and stamina. On TV he has been played by Manu Bennett on CW's Arrow.

Evans rose to prominence as the director of the 2011 Indonesian martial arts film The Raid and its sequel, both of which are known for their ambitious fight sequences. He next has the period thriller The Apostle set to debut via Netflix. Magic Mike star Manganiello has Dwayne Johnson's videogame adaptation Rampage due out in April.

Warner Bros.' next DC film, Justice League, opens Nov. 17.

Why does WB think every DC villain needs their own movie?

Overreacting to complaints that everyone should've gotten origin stories before Justice League? "Well if we're gonna use these Batman villains at some point, might as well set em up right."

I'm kidding, but only a little...

Maybe they're trying to set up an Injustice Society film, despite the relative failure of Suicide Squad.

Creative failure, sure. But it made bank and they finally hired a director for the sequel. Two parallel mini-franchises about baddies? And DC wonders why they can't get that Marvel dough.

Maybe WB wanted a Deadpool film of their own? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(*even though Deathstroke served as the inspiration for Deadpool, which was created by arguably the least imaginative and the worst comic book artist of any generation, Rob Liefeld )

They don't. They're simply willing to take pitches from filmmakers on characters in their IP and develop them as potential projects.

He's got the look and was someone I would have loved to see as Superman. Not that I've had any complaints about Cavill. I will say DC's main problem is WB doesn't understand the characters it owns and is trying to fast track the DCEU films by stuffing too much in one film. Spread it out and let it savor a bit instead of leaving it on the grill too long.

They aren't overtly looking that far ahead. They outright stated recently that macro-stories over multiple films don't concern them right now post-JL. They simply want to develop any and all ideas within the IP and release individual (but still in continuity) films.

lol, they really don't. One time, DC made the original Green Lantern (not Hal Gordon) into a gay character. Once WB found out about this, they thought DC was making Hal Gordon gay and set up a talk with DC and their writer.

WB doesn't need to understand the characters as long as the people heading DC Films do.

"Evans who initially passed on directing Justice League Dark, however impressed DC executives with his Deathstroke pitch that the company decided to go forward with a spinoff film."

https://www.thewrap.com/gareth-evans...s-deathstroke/

DC Executives would imply Geoff Johns, Diane Nelson, etc.

And moving forward with a treatment and/or script is no guarantee the film eventually gets made, of course. It's simply how film studios work.

You mean Hal Jordan Yeah, I remember when they updated Alan Scott's character and I'm cool with that. As long as the core of the character is there I'm good with some of the creative licensing the studios take in bringing them onto the screen.

I'm all in for Evans directing, given his work on The Raid films. The hand-to-hand combat is going to be amazing. I hope the story is up to snuff as well.

Plot twist: the Deathstroke movie is actually The Raid 3, and Deathstroke dukes it out with Rama.
